Program Overview:
Since 2009, Trinity Law Clinic, operated by Trinity Law School in furtherance of its mission “to form virtuous attorneys in the Christian legal tradition for the common good and love of neighbor,” has partnered with the Orange County Rescue Mission (OCRM) to provide legal services to residents of the Village of Hope in Tustin, California. Through the clinic, Trinity Law School students fulfill that mission while gaining hands-on legal experience serving individuals who may otherwise have limited access to legal assistance.
The clinic assists clients with a variety of legal matters, with approximately 80% of current matters involving family law.
Position Summary:
Trinity Law School is seeking a qualified California attorney who is committed to the mission and Christian values of Trinity Law School to serve as the Supervising Attorney for the Trinity Law Clinic, an adjunct faculty position. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitment to integrating professional excellence, service, mentorship, and Christian principles in the formation of future attorneys. Under the direction of the Assistant Dean of Clinical Programs, the Supervising Attorney oversees the operation of the clinic and provides direct instruction, mentorship, and supervision to the law students serving in the clinic.
The position is appointed on a semester-by-semester basis, with each semester spanning 15 weeks. The Supervising Attorney must be available to work on site at the Village of Hope for a full-office day most Fridays during the fall and spring semesters.
We are seeking someone to begin the role in the Spring 2027 semester, which begins in January, with a preference for continued service in subsequent semesters. Onboarding will occur prior to the start of the semester.
Adjunct faculty are paid every other week over the 15-week semester. Compensation information is available to prospective applicants upon request.
Responsibilities:
The Supervising Attorney will:
- Instruct and supervise law students as they interview clients, identify legal issues, conduct legal research, prepare documents and correspondence, and perform other practical tasks associated with the representation or assistance of clinic clients.
- Teach and model practical lawyering skills for students, many of whom enter the clinic with little or no prior law-office experience.
- Review student work and provide appropriate guidance and feedback to ensure that client matters are handled accurately, professionally, and ethically.
- Provide legal guidance regarding client matters, including available legal options, preparation and filing of documents, and assistance with self-represented matters.
- Maintain appropriate oversight of client files and ensure accurate records of client communications, student work, time, documents, and case activity, managed within the clinic's Clio Case Management Software.
- Ensure that clinic matters are handled in accordance with applicable professional, ethical, confidentiality, and in fulfillment of the mission of Trinity Law School.
- Provide legal assistance to self-represented clients, with no expectation of appearing in court on their behalf unless the Supervising Attorney elects to undertake such representation.
- Foster a positive, collaborative, and service-oriented relationship with the OCRM leadership and staff while representing Trinity Law School.
- Attend bi-annual faculty meetings.
Qualifications:
- Active license to practice law in California and good standing with the State Bar of California.
- Family law experience is strongly preferred.
- Ability and desire to teach, mentor, and closely supervise law students who are developing practical legal skills and professional character as Christian attorneys.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills and an ability to work effectively and compassionately with clients facing financial and other significant life challenges.
- Ability to work collaboratively with Trinity Law School and the OCRM faculty, staff, and leadership.
- Must affirm Trinity Law School's Statement of Faith (https://catalog.tiu.edu/law/university-info/faith/) and otherwise meet the qualifications for appointment as a Trinity Law School adjunct faculty member.
Schedule and Location
The Trinity Law Clinic operates on site at the Orange County Rescue Mission's Village of Hope each Friday during the fall and spring semesters.
Hours: 8:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m.
