CGS is seeking a Law Clerk/Attorney to join our team supporting the legal mission of a large federal agency in Jackson, MS. This position will allow candidates to demonstrate expertise in providing litigation support tasks like legal research, legal drafting, and administrative support to multiple attorneys.

Job Description:
Oversees USAO's practice with regard to 28 USC 2255 (habeas corpus) matters including:
  • receiving and docketing new motions, calendaring upcoming due dates, contacting appropriate
  • AUSA/Support Staff regarding locating files necessary to drafting responses; preparing a draft response for review by appropriate AUSA; and attending to timely filing of responses. Also assists AUSAs with large-scale projects necessitated by new judicial precedent or federal legislation.
  • Analyzes statutes, legislative intent, judicial precedents, agency rules and regulations, and law review articles as they relate to assigned cases to include those of an especially complex or unprecedented nature.
  • Supports AUSA by briefing attorney on pertinent facts, issues and case law.
  • Drafts legal documents for signature of appropriate attorney. Drafts proposed orders for signature of judges and magistrates.
  • Works with the assigned AUSAs and/or supervisory attorneys, determines applicable legal standards and identified strongest arguments.
  • Understands all applicable laws and keeps abreast of any new developments. Alerts AUSAs to potential issues while working on the case file.
  • Other related duties within scope as assigned.

Position Requirements:
  • Law Degree (J.D.)
  • Licensed by a state bar
  • Valid United States driver's license and dependable vehicle
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize law library resources and working knowledge of online research tools (e.g., Westlaw, Lexis/Nexis, CourtLink)
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
