The Honorable Judge Don Fraser is seeking a part-time Law Clerk to provide support to the Court of Common Pleas. Under administrative direction of the Magistrate, the Law Clerk will perform legal research; draft memos, bench notes, bench briefs; attend pertinent court proceedings; assist with specific criminal and domestic cases as needed; perform routine clerical and administrative tasks as needed. This position is part-time. The term/duration would be for one year and the hours would be 10-20 per week. This position is not eligible for insurance benefits or vacation.

Qualifications:
Completion of a bachelor's degree; attending an ABA accredited law school; or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Licensure or Certification Requirements: None.

Personal computer, applicable computer software, printer, copy machine, fax machine, and other standard business office equipment.

  • The employee has exposure to chemical compounds found in an office environment (e.g., toner, correction fluid, etc.); is exposed to possible injury due to unclean or unsanitary conditions; has contact with potentially violent or emotionally distraught persons; has exposure to hazardous driving conditions; uses or works in proximity to the use of firearms; ascends and/or descends ladders, stairs, or scaffolds; works in or around crowds; has exposure to life threatening situations; has to work irregular hours.
  • Note: In accordance with the U.S. Department of Labor physical demands strength ratings, this is considered sedentary to light work.

Essential Functions:
Performs legal research; analyzes legal issues; remains up to date on the latest case and statutory law; review and draft memos regarding civil motions. Review civil cases for service, lack of prosecution, foreclosure check list items, and issues that need to be brought to the attention of the Magistrate; draft orders regarding lack of prosecution, service, missing documentation, stay orders, scheduling orders, and other orders as directed; review motions for default, summary judgment, and confirmation and informs the Magistrate of any issues; review garnishments; review and conduct legal research of criminal and domestic motions as assigned.

Draft bench notes for substantive civil and criminal hearings; draft bench briefs for all civil and criminal trials; draft jury instructions for all civil and criminal jury trials.

Perform routine clerical and administrative tasks as needed; maintain case statistics.

Maintain required licensures, certification, and continuing education requirements, if any.

Meet all job safety requirements and all applicable safety standards that pertain to essential functions.

Demonstrate regular and predictable attendance.
