Description:The Attorney General is the chief legal officer of the State of Maryland. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) has the general charge, supervision, and direction of the State's legal business, acting as legal advisors and representatives of the major agencies, various boards, commissions, officials, and institutions of State Government. The OAG also protects the public by civil enforcement of antitrust, civil rights, consumer protection, and securities laws and regulations and by the prosecution of organized crime, Medicaid fraud, environmental crimes, insurance fraud, state tax evasion, and other statutorily assigned matters. As Maryland's 47th Attorney General, Anthony G. Brown leads the Office with a critical focus on equity, justice, and fairness.
The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) is seeking a motivated and detail‑oriented Law Clerk to support the legal team representing the Maryland Department of Commerce. This clerkship offers an excellent opportunity for a current law student or recent graduate to gain hands‑on experience in government legal practice, including transactional work, procurement, labor and employment matters, litigation support, and statutory analysis.

Responsibilities: Under the supervision of the Deputy Principal Counsel, the Law Clerk will assist with a wide range of legal work, including
- Contract development, including assisting in the drafting, review, and negotiation of contracts and legal agreements to ensure compliance with state and federal laws.
- Supporting procurement matters by assisting in contract drafting and conducting research assignments related to state procurement requirements.
- Conducting research and providing support on labor and employment matters, including EEO, ADA, and preparation for proceedings before the EEOC, MCCR, OAH, and in general litigation.
- Preparing closing memoranda that summarize legal issues and document conclusions for completed transactions.
- Conducting statutory and regulatory research, including interpretation of statutes, regulations, and case law relevant to Commerce programs.
- Reviewing and summarizing case files, contracts, and administrative records.
- Assisting attorneys with litigation preparation, including discovery tasks and trial support.
- Attending hearings, meetings, and internal briefings as appropriate.
- Assisting with legislative and regulatory review and analysis.
- Performing other duties as assigned to support the legal needs of the Commerce unit.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Current enrollment in an accredited law school
- Strong legal research and writing skills
- Demonstrated interest in public service, administrative law, or litigation
- Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet deadlines
- Familiarity with Westlaw, LexisNexis, or other legal research tools
- Professionalism, discretion, and a commitment to ethical legal practice
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working in a public law office, legal clinic, or government agency
- Coursework in administrative law, constitutional law, or public interest law
- Familiarity with Maryland law and court procedures
