Job Summary:
The Intellectual Property (IP) Attorney supports Midmark's Legal Department in managing and protecting the company's intellectual property portfolio. This role collaborates closely with the General Counsel and Associate General Counsel to support legal initiatives in the medical device industry. Responsibilities include conducting IP assessments, managing patent and trademark portfolios, advising on IP risks, and supporting strategic innovation initiatives. Performs work under general supervision.

Essential/Primary Duties:
  • Drafts, files, and prosecutes U.S. and international patent applications in collaboration with outside counsel
  • Conducts patentability, freedom-to-operate, and infringement analyses to support product development and commercialization
  • Manages and maintains the company's IP portfolio, including patents, trademarks, and trade secrets
  • Supports internal invention disclosure processes and participates in innovation reviews
  • Coordinates with engineering, R&D, and marketing teams to identify and protect new intellectual property
  • Advises on licensing, joint development agreements, and third-party IP matters
  • Reviews contracts, NDAs, and other legal documents for IP-related risks and compliance
  • Supports IP litigation, oppositions, and enforcement matters as needed
  • Stays current on changes in IP law and educates internal teams on best practices

Secondary Duties:
  • Assists with general corporate legal work, including due diligence and compliance matters
  • Supports cross-functional legal initiatives and departmental process improvements

Education and/or Experience:
Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school; licensed to practice in at least one U.S. jurisdiction. Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). 1 to 4 years of experience in intellectual property law within a law firm or in-house legal department, preferably in the medical device or life sciences sector, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Competency And/Or Skill:
  • Solid working knowledge of U.S. and international patent and trademark law
  • Strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Comprehensive attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Experience with IP docketing systems and legal document management tools
  • Working knowledge of product development processes in regulated industries
