A Brief OverviewThe In-House Attorney position is an attorney position responsible for reviewing, revising, and drafting various contracts important to the ongoing operations of the organization, as well as researching and analyzing legal issues assigned and providing guidance, advice and education regarding legal matters affecting Stormont Vail Health System. This attorney position ensures the Deputy General Counsel/Chief Compliance Officer is kept informed about case law, legal proceedings and current events, as well as their implications to Stormont Vail. The In-House Attorney will work with Deputy General Counsel to oversee litigation and risk mitigation for the organization as assigned and to manage outside counsel. The In-House Counsel assists in the development, implementation and management of policies, processes, procedures and educational programs to drive overall compliance with internal and external policies, standards, laws and regulations. The In-House Counsel supports the Vice President/Deputy General Counsel to successfully meet the duties and expectations of the legal program. This position also indirectly assists and guides organizational directors and managers in their roles.

Experience Qualifications
- 2 years Working in a law firm or in a corporation as an attorney. Preferred
- 1 year Experience related to contract drafting and negotiating. Preferred
- 1 year Litigation experience, including medical malpractice, property, real estate, personal injury and related insurance claims. Preferred
- 2 years Experience administering large scale projects or programs. Preferred
- 1 year Experience in a healthcare setting performing legal/administrative/compliance related duties or experience in a law firm supporting clients in the healthcare industry. Preferred
Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to read and write legal documentation and interpret the same. (Required proficiency)
- Proficient with computer applications including word and excel and be able to demonstrate the ability to compile, analyze and present data. (Preferred proficiency)
- Possess excellent communications skills, written and oral. (Required proficiency)
- Must be able to interact professionally with customers, medical staff, hospital administration, health system employees and attorneys. (Required proficiency)
- Possess excellent decision-making skills. (Preferred proficiency)
Licenses and Certifications:
Kansas law license or ability to secure such license prior to start of employment or within the first year of employment as permitted by Kansas laws and regulations is required.
What you will do:
- Conducting legal research and review of case law, regulations, legislation, ongoing legal proceedings, and current legal practices that may impact the Health System.
- Analyzing and interpreting legal documents/contracts for risk, impact, trends, and opportunities for the Health System to develop initiatives.
- Support the Vice President/Deputy General Counsel and the legal program in the fulfillment of their responsibilities with respect to compliance with federal and state requirements and minimization of risk and fortuitous loss;
- Draft, review and revise contracts and contractual provisions, as needed, based on strategy discussions, senior management input, and organizational needs and expectations.
- Assist the Deputy General Counsel to oversee litigation and workers compensation programs.
- Maintain knowledge of industry standards and regulatory changes to incorporate best practices into the Stormont Vail Health programs and processes to continuously improve and promote compliance across the organization.
- Liaising with staff on all levels of the organization to analyze and determine comprehensive compliance, legal program and contract strategies as assigned.
- Identify opportunities to improve business processes and devise plans to implement these changes;
- Assist with the implementation and maintenance of related health system policies and practices used across the organization;
- Define, design and implement policies, processes and educational programs, as well as partner in collaborative projects in support of legal matters and the contracting process, as well as maintenance of significant documentation in support thereof;
- Travel to Stormont Vail Health worksites and other locations, as necessary, to carry out the responsibilities of the role and to promote positive engagement across the organization.
- Participate in legal strategy meetings to identify issues and organizational requirements, facilitate discussions, and obtain senior management input on required deliverables.
- Serve as a reference to internal business directors and managers regarding operational policies, contractual negotiations, litigation, and legal matters impacting the organization.
Travel Requirements:
20% In-house Counsel may travel to all Stormont Vail Health worksites and may also travel for conferences or seminars specific to the operations of Stormont Vail Health.
