The Opportunity:A Non-Profit Organization seeks an individual to run A Non-Profit Organization Upstate Coordinator Project and playing a key role in developing detained removal defense technical support and expansion of universal representation. Reporting to the Training & Legal Technical Assistance (TLTA) Director, the NYFIUP Supervising Attorney, will require quarterly reporting and oversight of database transitions and acquisitions and will work with assisting the Training & Legal Technical Assistance team in planning, coordinating, and providing legal supports for all Fellows. This is a funded based position subject to renewal funding after 12/31/2025.
Core Responsibilities include:
- Supervise NYIFUP Upstate Coordinator Project, creating connections to detained removal defense representation organizations, managing NYIFUP reporting processes and databases, and providing technical assistance to NYIFUP providers.
- Hold regular case rounds/office hours for Fellows to workshop difficult case issues and make referrals to partners/host organizations/experts where needed
- Coordinate development of materials/content and present trainings for IJC during Fall training, conferences, and monthly meetings
- Develop, maintain, and consistently update legal resources and templates in a resource bank available to Fellows, including samples, unpublished written decisions fellows have received, etc.
- Collaborate with the Training & Legal Technical Assistance team to maintain a system for collecting templates, samples, and unpublished, decisions from Fellows and Alumni
- Draft and circulate legal analysis on key immigration law decisions
- Participate in process to recruit/select/match Fellows and Host Organizations
- Attend legal conferences and practice group meetings on behalf of IJC
- Liaise with relevant stakeholders to elevate and advance representation issues identified; engage in coalition efforts to promote universal representation
Position Requirements:
- Juris Doctor, with detailed removal defense and immigration law experience is required
- Admission to any U.S. State bar, New York preferred
- Minimum of 5 years of experience practicing immigration law; thorough understanding of law and processes for detained removal defense and affirmative immigration cases required
- Strong strategic planning and analytical skills
- Exhibited ability to effectively mentor and guide new legal representatives in the practice of immigration law
- Excellent analytical, organization, interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
- Commitment to IJC's mission of expanding access to high-quality counsel for immigrants and developing legal capacity in under-served communities, a plus
- Relationship building and relationship management skills
- Strong legal training and/or legal technical assistance services experience
- Tech savvy and well-organized project management expertise
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively across lines of race, class, and marginalized communities, required
