About this Position: Full-time position based in Anchorage, Alaska. Telework options available

About the Position:
AIJ's Research and Policy Institute is dedicated to social and environmental justice research and litigation to inform public policy at the local, national and international level. This position has several major job responsibilities, including working with Tribes and state and federal government agencies, preparing written reports and legal analysis, reviewing legislation related to disaster relief and response, land use planning and hazard mitigation. Demonstrated commitment to environmental and social justice is critical.

Qualifications:
  • J.D., preference for Alaska Bar license.
  • Demonstrated commitment to human rights and climate justice.
  • Minimum two years public policy, litigation or legal work experience.
  • Preferred previous work experience with Alaska Native communities.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Work with AIJ staff and Alaska Native Tribes on public policy and advocacy issues to support Alaska Native communities to respond to the climate crisis;
  • Work with Alaska Native Tribes and federal and state government agencies to advance climate justice and access to funding and technical assistance;
  • Work with the AIJ team and Alaska Native Tribes to draft legislative analysis, position statements, white papers, reports, articles, fact sheets and issue briefs;
  • Collaborate in planning and implementing AIJ Research and Policy Institute events and meetings with government and non-profit agencies;
  • Represent the project team and participate in relevant Arctic and climate policy meetings and working groups;
  • Travel to Alaska Native communities.
