About This Position:The Assistant Chief Counsel's work is performed in the Office of the City Attorney, in accordance with general policies of the City Council and City Manager and the accepted standards of the legal profession, including all applicable ethical rules.
This vacancy is in the Civil Division, supporting the Human Resources section. The Assistant Chief Counsel is responsible for managing a Section that provides legal advice to Human Resources, Retirement and Equal Opportunity Departments. The preferred candidate has experience with transactional work and management or supervision of staff. The Section Chief will supervise 6 to 7 attorneys in the Civil division and represent the departments. This position represents the City, its agents, and employees in all aspects of legal work related to those departments.
This position is expected to perform difficult professional and complex legal work, including revisions to the Phoenix City Code, client consultation to assist decision makers, and drafting legal analysis to assist managers and directors with a variety of issues. It will require attending public meetings or representing the City during administrative hearings or court proceedings. Understanding of state and federal civil rights laws, employee conduct, benefit programs, and labor law and labor negotiations is desired. This position reports directly to the Chief Assistant City Attorney or Chief Counsel but is expected to work independently in performing all assigned duties.
This position is eligible for up to 4 days a week of remote telework, with one in-office day per week for meeting with your section, implemented at the discretion of the City Attorney. Attorneys are expected to meet the needs of the City, including handling all court obligations, City Council or City management meetings, and other in-office obligations.
Salary:
$139,214.40 to $196,081.60 annually. Salary commensurate with experience and qualifications.
