Legal Services of Northern Virginia (LSNV) is a large, high-volume legal aid organization in Virginia, with 45+ attorneys spanning seven offices. We help thousands of clients each year in civil legal matters, while cultivating relationships with community service organizations, local law firms, pro bono attorneys, and local bar associations, and other stakeholders to serve the region's low-income and neediest populations.Job Summary: We are seeking three (3) full-time Housing Law Staff Attorneys to join our dedicated team.
These full-time attorney positions provide legal representation to the LSNV client community, focusing on housing law. The attorneys work closely with the Managing Attorney and the Housing Law Practice Group Chair to plan and implement outreach and community legal education.
These are hybrid positions, based in our Fairfax office (10700 Page Avenue STE 100, Fairfax, VA, 22030).
Essential Functions:
- Handles a high volume of housing-related legal matters for clients, with a focus on in-court representation and eviction prevention.
- Assists in developing and participating in legal outreach and community legal education projects and programs.
- Collaborates with tenants, community groups, organizations, landlords, and local government.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Assists with pro bono coordination within jurisdiction, including recruitment, mentoring of attorneys, and development of materials.
- Conducts courthouse outreach.
- Creates, revises, and mails outreach literature.
- Responsible for grant reporting initiatives that may be required.
- Handles cases, completes legal research and writing, drafts legal documents, and represents clients in housing-related legal matters.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will possess a demonstrated commitment to public interest work and a strong desire to assist indigent applicants. Further, the ideal candidate will meet the following requirements:
- Must be licensed with the Virginia State Bar, or have two (2) years of practice in another state (LAC Rule 1A:9).
- Interest in gaining litigation experience.
- Interest in working with clients of diverse ethnicities and backgrounds, sexual orientations, genders, and individuals with disabilities.
- Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
- Commitment to social justice, racial justice, and/or public interest work, strongly preferred.
- Experience in community engagement and advocacy, strongly preferred.
- Legal aid experience, strongly preferred.
- Strong litigation experience, preferred.
- Multi-lingual (verbal and written), preferred.
- For two (2) positions, one (1) to three (3) years of legal experience is preferred, but not required.
- For one (1) position, three (3) to five (5) years of legal experience is preferred, but not required.
Compensation: The salary ranges from $74,000 to $108,000 based on years of experience and the legal aid pay scale.
