The University of Washington School of Law equips students and recent graduates with the with intellectual tools and hands-on legal experience in their journey to become practice-ready lawyers able to work in any field they choose through excellent doctrinal and experiential offerings.

The Barer Institute for Leadership in Law & Global Development will annually support recent graduates of the Sustainable International Development (SID) J.D., LL.M., or M.J. programs to do meaningful legal research and project work focused on topics relating to the rule of law and related fields connected to law and economic development. The fellow will work under the supervision of one or more UW Law faculty members or affiliate instructors, ideally also in collaboration with an international, nonprofit, or non-governmental organization working in fields relating to the rule of law and law and development including responsible business In global supply chains, human rights, environmental protection, and/or indigenous people's rights.

This is a one-year fellowship to begin in the Autumn of 2025, with the precise start date to be mutually agreed by the fellow and supervisor(s). The principal supervisor for the position will be Professor Anita Ramasastry.

Responsibilities:
Research and Drafting (80%)
  • Conducting in-depth desk-based research; performing thorough and essential legal and factual desk-based research
  • Consulting with experts and relevant stakeholders to inform research
  • Drafting legal memoranda, reports, annotated bibliographies, comprehensive summaries, or other documents as required by the fellowship
  • Maintaining records of research pathways and sources, bibliographies
  • Supervising current UW Law students in legal or factual research to contribute to projects, as appropriate

Program Development and Administration (20%)
  • Organizing and leading meetings with relevant stakeholders, as appropriate
  • Organizing work product for future reference by fellows and students
  • Assisting faculty in development of curricular offerings for graduate and undergraduate students as well as international curricular partnerships focused on the rule of law
  • Supporting grant request/reporting requirements, as needed
  • Supporting related events and colloquia, in partnership with Barer Institute team
  • Providing a summary and reflection of work completed during the fellowship at the conclusion of the one-year fellowship

Minimum Requirements:
  • Law degree (J.D., LL.M., or M.J.) from University of Washington School of Law with studies in international law, comparative law or sustainable development.
  • At least 1 year of experience working with international organizations (nongovernmental or governmental).

Additional Qualifications:
  • Strong research and writing skills
  • Candidates must be able to work both independently and as part of a team and must possess strong written and oral communication skills
  • Prior experience in the legal field is a plus.
