Firm Overview
The Firm is a multi-state creditors' rights law firm operating in more than 20 jurisdictions, with core practices in foreclosures, bankruptcy, litigation, and evictions. The Firm operates in a highly regulated environment and is seeking an experienced General Counsel to oversee compliance-driven legal functions, state regulatory requirements, and enterprise legal risk.

Position Summary:
  • The General Counsel serves as the Firm's primary legal advisor on regulatory compliance, corporate governance, licensing and filings, insurance requirements, and general legal risk management. This role works closely with the Compliance Department and executive leadership to ensure the Firm maintains good standing across all jurisdictions and operates within applicable legal, regulatory, and professional responsibility frameworks.
  • This position is ideal for an attorney with strong organizational skills, regulatory experience, and the ability to manage ongoing legal obligations in a complex, multi-state professional services environment.

Core Responsibilities:
Compliance & Regulatory Oversight
  • Partner closely with the Compliance Department to support firm-wide adherence to state and federal regulations, bar rules, and professional responsibility requirements.
  • Advise on compliance policies, procedures, and internal controls.
  • Identify and assess regulatory risks and support remediation efforts as needed.
  • Monitor regulatory changes impacting the Firm and advise leadership accordingly.

State Filings, Licensing & Corporate Maintenance
  • Oversee and manage all required state filings, registrations, licenses, and renewals across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Ensure the Firm and its affiliated entities remain in good standing with secretaries of state, courts, bar authorities, and other regulatory bodies.
  • Coordinate annual reports, foreign qualifications, assumed name filings, and entity maintenance.
  • Maintain accurate records related to corporate structure, ownership, and jurisdictional authority.

Insurance & Risk Management
  • Oversee the Firm's insurance programs, including professional liability, general liability, cyber, employment practices, and other coverage as appropriate.
  • Coordinate with brokers, carriers, and leadership on renewals, coverage analysis, and claims reporting.
  • Advise on risk mitigation strategies related to insurance coverage and contractual obligations.

General Legal Risk & Advisory Support
  • Advise Firm leadership on general legal risks affecting operations, growth, and strategic initiatives.
  • Review and advise on policies related to data protection, confidentiality, records retention, and conflicts.
  • Provide guidance on employment-related legal issues in coordination with HR and outside counsel.
  • Support expansion into new jurisdictions by identifying regulatory, licensing, and compliance requirements.

Governance & Internal Support
  • Support corporate governance matters, including entity management and internal documentation.
  • Maintain and update firm policies and procedures from a legal and regulatory perspective.
  • Coordinate with outside counsel as needed on specialized legal matters.
  • Serve as a trusted legal resource to leadership and operational teams.

Qualifications:
  • Juris Doctor; active bar license in good standing.
  • 7+ years of legal experience, preferably with exposure to regulatory compliance, professional services, or multi-jurisdictional operations.
  • Experience working closely with compliance teams or regulatory bodies.
  • Familiarity with law firm operations, professional responsibility rules, and regulated environments.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple ongoing legal obligations across jurisdictions.
  • Sound judgment, discretion, and strong communication skills.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $200,000.00 - $350,000.00 per year
