The Maine Department of Professional and Financial Regulation, Bureau of Insurance is seeking a skilled and collaborative General Counsel to provide strategic legal leadership and ensure strong oversight of the insurance industry.

This is an opportunity to play a critical role in safeguarding consumers, supporting professional staff, and guiding the Bureau through complex legal and regulatory matters.

As General Counsel, you will serve as the Bureau's primary legal advisor and trusted partner to leadership and staff. In this role, you will:
  • Provide legal guidance to staff attorneys across Bureau divisions
  • Advise on pending and proposed legislation
  • Collaborate with Bureau staff to resolve legal and regulatory interpretation issues
  • Coordinate with the Office of the Attorney General as needed
  • Support the Superintendent on matters impacting Bureau operations and policy

Minimum Qualifications:
A law degree from an accredited law school. A minimum of five (5) years' experience as a practicing attorney and at least three (3) years' experience in a field directly related to the area of assignment. Experience in regulatory compliance, financial compliance or administrative law is preferred but not required.

Licensing Requirements:
Must be admitted to practice law in Maine and currently registered with the Maine Board of Overseers of the Bar or be able to obtain such admission and registration within six (6) months of hire.
