Job Description:
Job Summary:
The General Counsel serves as the chief legal officer for Salisbury University, providing legal advice and strategic counsel to the President, Cabinet, and other senior leaders. The role ensures that the University operates in compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations as well as University System of Maryland policies. The General Counsel manages institutional risk, and supports the University's mission with legal guidance. The General Counsel also collaborates across academic and administrative units to develop policies, resolve disputes, and anticipate emerging legal challenges in higher education.

Authority and Accountability
The General Counsel is a direct report to the President of the University. Like other non-VP direct reports, the position works with the Chief of Staff on administrative functions such as budget management and personnel matters.

Required/Minimum Qualifications:
  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school.
  • Admission to practice law in the State of Maryland (or eligibility for admission).
  • A minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible legal experience in government or 5 years in a senior legal counsel role or equivalent leadership position; experience in higher education, government, or public sector preferred.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in employment law, contract law, student affairs, and risk management.
  • Knowledge of and experience with state and federal regulatory frameworks.
  • Experience in leadership roles.
