The General Counsel (GC) serves as the Firm's chief legal officer and strategic legal adviser to the Executive Board (EB) Chair, Chief Executive, Executive Board, and Senior Leadership Team. This crucial role provides deep legal knowledge combined with business acumen to navigate the complexities of a rapidly evolving legal and regulatory landscape, geopolitical volatility, and accelerating technological change. The GC brings strategic foresight, agility, and deep industry insight to proactively manage risk, drive ethical excellence, and support the Firm's long-term growth and resilience.
The GC leads the legal interests and responsibilities of the firm with a forward-thinking, business-oriented approach – ensuring timely, balanced responses to emerging risks and opportunities. This includes oversight of internal and external counsel, review and refinement of partnership agreements, oversight of the firm's insurance policies, and analysis of past claims to strengthen the Firm's risk posture. Compensation and Benefits:
Employees are entitled to compensation commensurate with skill and experience. The exact compensation will vary based on skills, experience, location, and other factors permitted by law. The expected compensation range for this position is $200,000 - $600,000.
The above salaries do not include a discretionary bonus, however bonus opportunities are non-guaranteed, and are dependent upon individual and firm performance. - Advise the EB Chair, Chief Executive, Executive Board and Senior Leadership Team on legal implications of strategic decisions, transactions, and firm-wide initiatives.
- Provide clear guidance on governance, policy development, and ethical standards across the Firm.
- Serve as a key voice in strategic planning, practice management, and special projects with legal dimensions.
- Provide decisive and knowledgeable input on a variety of risk and legal issues raised for input related to the firm's ethical protections and responsibilities.
- Serve as a key strategic advisor to the executive team, including Chief Executive and Chief Operating Officer, proactively identifying and managing not only legal risks but also reputational, public relations, and broader business risks that may impact the firm.
- Demonstrate a pragmatic, business-oriented mindset, balancing legal considerations with the commercial objectives and reputation of the firm.
- Collaborate closely and responsively with all operational teams—including conflicts, docketing, and other administrative functions—to ensure risks are managed holistically across the firm.
- Maintain a highly organized and methodical approach to managing multiple responsibilities, ensuring timely and effective communication and follow-up with stakeholders at all levels.
- Communicate emerging risk trends and regulatory changes within the legal industry to guide operations teams in adapting strategies for compliance and organizational resilience.
- Provide clear, actionable guidance that reflects a thorough understanding of the applicable law as well as broader business context, supporting sound and strategic decision-making across all functions.
- Foster a culture of proactive risk awareness, open communication, and accountability, ensuring that risk management is seamlessly integrated into the firm's strategic planning and daily operations.
- Exhibit a collaborative and approachable working style, building strong relationships with senior business leaders, attorneys, and business professionals to promote a unified approach to risk and business management.
- Lead proactive risk identification and mitigation strategies, informed by geopolitical, regulatory, and technological trends.
- Analyze historical claims against the Firm and recommend structural or policy changes to prevent recurrence.
- Ensure compliance with employment law, benefits, intellectual property, and professional responsibility obligations.
- Manage any litigation involving the firm, including malpractice claims, regulatory investigations, and employment disputes.
- Collaborate with ethics and loss prevention specialists to uphold the Firm's commitment to integrity and ethical excellence.
- Provide guidance on sensitive internal and external communications, conflicts of interest, and reputational risk.
- Advises on professional liability, malpractice prevention, and insurance matters, including negotiating and overseeing the firm's insurance policies.
- Review, negotiate, and approve material contracts and agreements, including partner separation and employment arrangements.
- Recommend amendments to the Firm's Partnership Agreement to reflect evolving business needs and legal standards.
- Supervise Assistant General Counsel and coordinate with outside counsel on active claims and legal proceedings.
- Manage and oversee a team of attorneys and business professionals within the Office of General Counsel who support the functions and responsibilities of the General Counsel.
- Maintain strong relationships with General Counsels across the legal industry to benchmark best practices and anticipate emerging risks.
- Monitor legal and regulatory developments to inform Firm strategy and ensure readiness.
Position Requirements:
- JD required; active license to practice law in relevant jurisdiction.
- Significant experience as a law firm partner or in-house counsel at a comparable professional services firm; litigation experience preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to lead with strategic vision, business acumen, and ethical clarity.
- Exceptional judgment, responsiveness, and ability to manage complex, high-stakes issues under pressure.
- Strong communication and leadership skills; ability to influence across all levels of the Firm in a decisive yet consensus-building manner.
- Proficiency in legal technology platforms and litigation support tools.
