Overview:
The General Counsel is responsible for providing and overseeing legal strategy and support of the Company's business activities with a focus on contracts, corporate governance, human resources, litigation management, regulatory law (MSHA, OSHA, EPA, etc.), and management of external counsel. This position will also provide general support to the Company's efforts regarding environmental permitting, communications and government relations.

Responsibilities:
Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following (other duties and responsibilities may be assigned):
  • Is responsible for all legal matters of the Company.
  • Serves as legal representative for the Board of Directors.
  • Coordinates legal activities with Owner's attorneys.
  • Drafts or provides guidance to the Company's Policy Committee to ensure the adoption of or continuance of policies and procedures that are legally compliant and that assist the Company's leaders in providing the lowest cost source of energy for our Owners.
  • Manages the Ethics program for the Company including the management of the anonymous complaint hotline.
  • Coordinates legal aspects of liability matters, human resource management, contract management, establishes goals and objectives for the functional areas of the Company under its leadership that are consistent with the overall organizational goals.
  • Oversees the Information Governance program within the Company ensuring compliance with regulatory retention requirements and best practices for corporate records management.
  • Serves as a member of the Senior Leadership team.
  • Must have regular and reliable attendance.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
Directly supervises all Legal Department activities. Carries out supervisory responsibilities for Direct reports in accordance with PSGC policies and applicable laws, rules, and regulations.

Education/Experience:
  • A juris doctorate degree from an ABA Accredited University in the United States.
  • Must have a minimum of five years equivalent previous related experience, preferably in Illinois.

Certification/Licensure
  • Licensed to practice law in the State of Illinois or ability to obtain license or become authorized in-house counsel within six months of hire date.

Knowledge of:
  • Extensive knowledge of employment law including ADA and FMLA requirements, contracts, and ethics and compliance.
