Description:
Freed Marcroft is a remote-first Connecticut family law boutique with offices across the state, including Hartford, Middletown, and Westport. We're hiring an attorney with 2-4 years of marital and family law experience. You've spent real time in the courtroom and with clients, and you're ready for more: more responsibility with more support, and more room to grow as an advocate and counselor-at-law. You'd rather spend your days on strategy, building your cases, and serving your clients than on administration or getting new clients in the door.
We're serious lawyers and professional legal staff who also genuinely like each other, and firm-wide turnover is under 5% a year.
The Basics:
- Remote-first: You work from home (unless you prefer to work out of an office). Most client meetings are by Zoom. You'll be in court, and occasionally meet in person at your nearest office when it makes sense, such as when others are involved or for signings.
- Compensation: $110,000-$160,000. Where you land depends on your level and what you collect, and collecting more can take you to the top of the range at any level. The ranges themselves rise as you advance.
- A guaranteed base, with pay above it that follows your collections. Once you're up and running, meet our 1,400 collected-hour annual expectation (we have the clients and work to get you there) and your salary never drops below the base for your level. Above that, it's reviewed each quarter and moves with the previous quarter's collected hours: strong quarters raise it, and a slower one can bring it back toward base.
- Getting started: Your first quarter is dedicated to onboarding, training, and ramping up your practice, and we don't expect you to hit your collected-hour target in it. You're first eligible for an increase at the end of your second quarter.
- Bonuses: Discretionary bonuses on top recognize exceptional work, such as training new attorneys or notable trials.
- Health coverage: The firm pays 100% of the employee's premium for health, vision, and disability coverage. Spouses and children can be added at the employee's cost.
- Retirement: The firm contributes 3% of your pay to your 401(k), whether or not you contribute yourself.
- Time off: estimated 27 paid days: typically 15 firm holidays, including a firm-wide closure the week between Christmas and New Year's, plus 12 PTO days.
- Parental leave
At Freed Marcroft, attorneys practice law. We have plenty of work, and we deliver the clients to you. There's no rainmaking requirement (origination is credited when it happens), and practicing attorneys don't have to rush back from court or take time from client work to do consultations. When you're out of the office, our team does everything the can to cover you. Our paralegals are the air traffic controllers, running point on client communication, and most client meetings happen on Zoom, so you can focus on strategy, clients, and court rather than administration, sales, or commuting to the office.
What You'll Do:
- Take the lead on divorce, custody, and other family law matters, from first strategy session through negotiations and in court
- Counsel clients directly so they can make the best, most informed decisions about their futures
- Set the strategy on your cases, sharpening it with colleagues through regular roundtabling and a weekly lawyers' meeting where the firm's brain trust works through the matters the lawyers choose to discuss
What We're Looking For:
- Connecticut bar admission in good standing
- Courtroom experience and real client work in family law. Two strong years counts. Four counts more. If you haven't yet had the responsibility you're ready for, this is where you'll get it.
Compensation, title, and responsibility grow with your experience and skills. As you take on more complex matters, lead larger cases, mentor newer attorneys, or move into a senior role, your pay and role grow with you.
