The Detroit Justice Center (DJC), The Detroit Justice Center (DJC), renowned for its innovative approach to community law practice, is currently seeking a contract position as a Contract Attorney for an initial one-year term.Position Overview:
As a Contract Attorney, you'll support clients addressing barriers related to family and traffic issues, along with housing law, especially for those impacted by incarceration. You will work with the Legal Services & Advocacy Practice (LSAP) to help clients restore their driver's licenses, secure stable housing, and address legal issues that impact their financial security.
Responsibilities:
- Provide legal guidance in housing, family, and traffic law, particularly on suspended driver's licenses, record expungement, and challenges to existing family cases.
- Conduct client interviews, create and communicate case strategies, and prepare necessary documents.
- Services include drafting and reviewing legal documents, including petitions, pleadings, motions, and settlement agreements; appearing on behalf of clients at status conferences, hearings, and trials; preparing witnesses; and assisting in propounding and/or responding to discovery.
- Communicate effectively with clients, providing guidance and advice on family law issues and answering their questions.
- Participate in legal clinics for driver's license restoration and criminal record expungement.
Qualifications:
- Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school, licensed to practice in Michigan.
- Minimum of 2 years of litigation experience, especially in family, traffic, and/or housing law.
- Independent work style, excellent communication, and commitment to community law.
- This is a part-time contract position offered at $75.00 per hour. This role does not include benefits.
- Contract attorneys will be provided access to legal subscription services such as Lexis and ICLE as part of their work.
- DJC will cover malpractice insurance for DJC-assigned cases.
