Description:

Earthjustice's Litigation & Advocacy Partnership (LAP) team is accepting applications for one full- or part-time Community-Centered Advocacy intern for fall 2024. We are seeking graduate and law students who share a passion for justice and a healthy environment. This is a paid position, and the successful candidate may work remotely or on a hybrid schedule from one of Earthjustice's offices.

Earthjustice is the premier nonprofit environmental law organization. We take on the biggest, most precedent-setting cases across the country. We wield the power of law and the strength of partnership to protect people's health; to preserve magnificent places and wildlife; to advance clean energy, and combat climate change. We partner with thousands of groups, supporters, individuals, and communities to engage in the critical environmental issues of our time and bring about positive change. We are guided by a passionate, ambitious vision for the future for people and our planet: until justice stands for all, we will never rest. We are here because the earth needs a good lawyer.

The Litigation & Advocacy Partnerships team works with Earthjustice departments and programs to assess current partnership priorities and goals regarding strategic advocacy, project, and case development. Our team is focused on helping staff strengthen Earthjustice's institutional capacity, resources, and skills for building authentic, lasting relationships with community-based organizations and other partners. To that end, we work to provide opportunities for staff to build their own knowledge and skills around cultural sensitivity, community lawyering, grassroots communication, and environmental justice principles; take the time necessary to cultivate and maintain their own relationships; and access institutional support and resources to effectively engage and work well with their community partners.

This role will provide essential support to ensure Earthjustice staff have access to dynamic and informative partnership-related programming at the Litigation Training Conference and the Quarterly Partnership Speaker Series (QPSS). The intern will also assist the LAP team with visioning and future programming planning, goal setting, and evaluation. The successful candidate will work under the direction of the Litigation and Advocacy Partnership's leadership.

  • Assist in the Planning and Execution of the Partnership Programming for the Litigation Training Conference
  • Assist in the Planning and Execution of the Quarterly Partnerships Speaker Series
  • Assist LAP Leadership with the Development of the Yearly Planning Memo
  • Attend weekly LAP staff meetings via Zoom
  • Attend the Annual Litigation Training Conference in Maryland during October 21-24, 2024 (If class/personal scheduling permits)

Qualifications:
  • Enrolled in a graduate study program or a rising 3L in law school during fall 2024.
  • Excellent research, writing, organizational, and communication skills
  • Strong work ethic, initiative, and ability to think creatively.
  • Ability to work collegially with others and independently.
  • Interest in public interest law and social justice.
  • Must have deep interest in strengthening partnerships and advancing relationships with environmental justice communities.
  • Working knowledge of MS Office programs
  • Preferred background in environmental policy or studies, civil rights, environmental justice, sociology, social work, or community organizing.
  • If full-time, must commit to 37.5 hours per week.
  • If part-time, must commit to at least 12 hours per week.

Compensation:
Interns at Earthjustice receive an hourly rate. The pay rates for fall 2024 will be confirmed by early-June but will be at least the highest national minimum wage.
