Description:
The Position:We are seeking an attorney whose primary responsibilities will be in litigation, with a substantial component of commercial transactional work and commercial and residential real estate. This is a role for a lawyer who wants to be in court and at the closing table — not confined to a single narrow niche.
You will be assigned your own matters and given the latitude to run them, with the support and counsel of experienced partners. The right candidate will grow into a significant contributor to the firm's litigation and transactional practices.
Responsibilities:
- Handle civil litigation matters in New York State Supreme Court, County Court, Surrogate's Court, Town and Village Courts, and Family Court, including pleadings, motion practice, discovery, depositions, court appearances, hearings, and trials
- Draft and negotiate commercial contracts, purchase and sale agreements, leases, loan and financing documents, and entity formation and governance documents
- Represent buyers, sellers, borrowers, lenders, landlords, and tenants in commercial and residential real estate transactions from contract through closing, including title review, survey and diligence issues, and closing document preparation
- Conduct legal research and prepare memoranda, opinion letters, and appellate briefs
- Communicate directly and regularly with clients, opposing counsel, brokers, lenders, title companies, and court personnel
- Manage a varied caseload independently, meeting court deadlines and closing dates without exception
Qualifications:
- J.D. from an accredited law school and admission to practice in New York State (or admission pending)
- Demonstrated experience in litigation, commercial transactions, and real estate; candidates with strength in two of the three and genuine interest in the third are encouraged to apply
- Excellent legal writing, drafting, and oral advocacy skills
- Outstanding time management and organizational ability, with the discipline to manage competing deadlines across multiple practice areas
- Sound judgment, attention to detail, and the professional maturity to handle client relationships independently
- Familiarity with Monroe County and greater Rochester-area courts and practice is a plus
- Portable book of business is welcome but not required
