Description:
Position Summary:The Sturm College of Law seeks to hire a visionary and nationally respected expert in the field of property rights and policy to serve as the inaugural Director of its Juhan Program in Property Rights and Policy, which advances research, teaching, and public engagement at the intersection of private property rights and governmental powers.
Essential Functions:
- The Director would be expected to (1) collaborate with the Dean, faculty, staff, and other interested internal and external stakeholders on initiatives designed to enhance the stature, visibility, and impact of the Juhan Program; (2) organize Program-related events, including lectures, conferences, and visits to campus by distinguished experts; (3) engage external partners and stakeholders, including, without limitation, law firms, oil and gas companies, energy companies, real estate developers, governmental officials, non-profit organizations and foundations, and other partners interested in issues at the intersection of private property rights and governmental regulation; (4) work with the Executive Associate Dean of Academic Affairs to develop an expanded suite of upper-division courses on specialized topics relating to private property and/or governmental regulation, including, without limitation, oil and gas law,
- energy law, agriculture law, real estate development, and eminent domain; and (5) partner with the law school's Externship and Career Development Offices to expand opportunities for students and recent graduates with organizations focused on private property rights and/or governmental regulation. The candidate would be eligible to teach a course bearing on the field of property rights and policy in an adjunct faculty capacity. This is a 12-month, part-time appointment capable of being held alongside other compatible professional commitments that the Director may wish to pursue. The successful candidate would receive an initial appointment for one calendar year, with the ability to renew for a second and/or third year upon mutual agreement of the parties. The candidate would be expected to begin work on or before June 1, 2026.
Required Qualifications:
- J.D. degree (or its equivalent)
- Expertise in the field of property rights and policy
- Ability to convene leading experts to discuss cutting-edge issues in the field
- Potential and interest in effectively teaching and mentoring law students
Working Environment:
- Standard office environment.
- Unexpected interruptions occur often and stress level is moderate to high.
- Noise level is quiet to moderate.
Physical Activities:
- Ability to work in front of a computer for extended periods of time.
- Occasionally required to move about the office/campus.
Work Schedule:
While the University's administrative offices are open Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm, faculty schedules vary from term to term and are based on courses taught, service commitments, and research agendas. The University's academic calendars are posted on the registrar's website (the law school is on a semester system and has a different academic calendar).
