Job Description:McGuireWoods is seeking an experienced 2-4 year associate to join its Carolinas Energy Regulatory practice, which is part of the firm's Regulatory & Compliance department. This cross-office team includes 15 attorneys in the Charlotte, Raleigh, and Columbia offices and the Firm is seeking candidates that may sit in either our Charlotte or Raleigh office.
McGuireWoods' Chambers-Ranked Carolinas Energy Regulatory practice primarily represents major electric, natural gas, and water utility clients in regulatory proceedings in North Carolina, South Carolina and other jurisdictions to execute all aspects of their regulated businesses, including, but not limited to: rate cases and gas/fuel rider proceedings; annual rate recovery mechanism cases; multi-jurisdictional integrated resource planning; certificate proceedings for major new generating facilities, renewable energy regulation, procurement and green tariff programs; DSM/EE; generator interconnection standard approval and administration; utility acquisitions; transmission; electric market design and Regional Transmission Organizations (RTOs); and regulatory compliance work for utilities, independent power producer regulatory matters, as well as water, telecom and many other types of energy companies across in regulated industries. Additionally, we regularly represent energy clients before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), as well as in appellate matters affecting our regulated utility clients.
Our lawyers also assist clients with energy regulatory aspects of transactions for the financing, development, acquisition and disposition of energy/utility assets. This role will provide the opportunity for significant exposure to clients and stand-up time in trial-type regulatory proceedings mentioned above before public service commissions in multiple states. In addition, the position will involve supporting natural gas local distribution companies and natural gas marketers as intervenors in Natural Gas Act Section 4 rate case proceedings brought by natural gas transmission companies before FERC, as well as pre-rate case settlement negotiations of a wide variety of natural gas transmission proceedings, including, but not limited to, fuel- and compliance-based tracker cost recovery negotiations.

Job Requirements:
Qualified candidates are preferred, but are not required, to have 2-4 years of experience and possess the following characteristics, attributes, or credentials:
- Energy regulatory experience at the state or federal level, or a civil litigation or regulatory background with interest in developing specialized expertise;
- Excellent academic credentials and demonstrated organization, writing, and communication skills;
- Demonstrated project management skills and the ability to deliver at a high level in a fast-paced setting;
- A commitment to excellence and client service and an enthusiasm for working with a team; and
- NC bar membership, the ability to gain NC bar admission by reciprocity, or a willingness to take the NC bar examination within 6 months of joining firm.
