Academic Req: Bachelor's degree; Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school

Preferred – JD with 10 plus years of experience in labor and employment law and handling general legal matters; Board Certified in Labor Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization

Certifications: Valid Texas Law License, in good standing

Work experience: Eight plus years providing legal counsel, advice, and services on labor and employment matters. Experience providing employment-related education and training. Five plus years of experience in handling a wide range of general legal matters.

Job description: Reporting directly to the Deputy General Counsel, the Labor and Employment Attorney is responsible for providing expert advice, counsel, and legal services on all labor and employment matters to FirstDay Foundation, its affiliates, and any companies for which FirstDay Foundation provides managed legal services. The Labor and Employment Attorney ensures compliance with all applicable employment laws, rules, and regulations. The Labor and Employment Attorney will also provide general legal assistance and services on a wide range of legal of matters for FirstDay Foundation, its affiliates, and any companies for which FirstDay Foundation provides managed legal services.

Critical Action Items & Measurable Deliverables:
  • Provide legal counsel and advice on all labor and employment issues, including hiring decisions, disciplinary actions, terminations, separations, and grievances.
  • Draft and review offer letters and employee agreements, including employment agreements and separation agreements.
  • Provide legal counsel and advice on employment law compliance, including but not limited to Service Contract Act issues, discrimination, harassment, and employment-related laws and requirements across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Represent clients in administrative hearings, including unemployment claims.
  • Provide expertise, guidance, and drafting of and for employment policies.
  • Liaise with outside counsel on employment litigation.
  • Provide employment-related trainings and educational opportunities.
  • Perform and assist with employee misconduct investigations.
  • Perform and assist with employee mediations.
  • Provide legal counsel, research, work, and assistance on a broad range of general legal matters.
  • Maintain knowledge of current laws, regulations, and policies.

Other Responsibilities:
  • Perform related work as assigned.
  • Ensure security and confidentiality of sensitive and/or confidential information.

Requirements:
  • Skill in legal research, legal and business writing, and analysis.
  • Skill in using personal computers, general office software, databases, and online legal research services and software.
  • Skill in negotiation.
  • Skill in interpersonal communications.
  • Ability to conduct research, to interpret and apply laws, and to summarize findings.
  • Ability to successfully manage multiple projects, tasks and priorities.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships both internally and externally.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain knowledge of all pertinent laws, rules, regulations, and procedures.
