Position Summary:
Spencer Fane has an opening for an attorney with 0-3 years of experience to join our growing Employee Benefits practice group. Candidates must be located in Kansas City, MO, Denver, CO or Overland Park, KS. An ideal candidate will have relevant ERISA, tax, or benefits experience, but these are not required if the candidate is a self-starter, a quick learner, and has a keen interest in employee benefits law. Prior law firm experience is a plus.

Primary Responsibilites
  • Conduct legal research and analysis to support litigation matters.
  • Draft pleadings, motions, briefs, and other legal documents with attention to detail.
  • Represent clients in court appearances, depositions, mediations, and arbitrations.
  • Manage and prioritize a diverse caseload.
  • Work closely with partners on complex litigation matters.
  • Communicate effectively with clients, opposing counsel, judges, mediators, arbitrators, and other parties involved in the litigation process.
  • Participate in strategy discussions and case planning.

Qualifications / Skills
  • Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school with an excellent academic record
  • Admission to the state bar corresponding to the office where the candidate is applying
  • Zero to 3 years of experience
  • Ability to interface directly with attorneys and clients
  • Demonstrate an ability to work independently and productively
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills
  • Strong decision-making, problem-solving and organization skills
  • Outstanding judgment
  • Ability to effectively handle multiple projects
  • Ability to develop and implement legal strategies

Physical Requirements:
  • Position is generally sedentary in nature; involves sitting most of the time, but may involve the need for inter-office mobility for brief periods of time
  • Ability to occasionally or routinely lift up to 10 – 20 lbs.
  • Ability to efficiently communicate
  • Ability to perform repetitive motions required
  • Ability to see and read PC screens, detect color coding, read fine print, and/or normal type size print
