Under limited supervision, the Emergency Protective Order Referee ("EPO Referee") serves as an "on call" subordinate judicial officer representing the Orange County Superior Court. Incumbents respond to requests by local law enforcement; issue ex parte emergency protective orders and temporary emergency gun violence restraining orders by phone; confer with law enforcement officers to secure information relevant to specific determinations and orders; and submit detailed and timely written reports, records, documents and forms as ordered by the Court. EPO Referees work on an extra-help, at-will basis and report to the General Counsel.

Work Schedule Information
- Each Epo Referee Is Assigned to Be "on-Call" During 24-Hour Shifts of Time, Which Will Be Scheduled from 9:00 A.M. One Day until 9:00 A.M. the Following Day.
- Each Epo Referee Will Be Assigned a Set Schedule of Approximately Three to Four 24-Hour Shifts per Month. the Shifts Can, and Often Do, Occur on Weekends and Holidays.
- Generally, All Work Is Off-Site, from Home or Other Location, but The Epo Referee Must Be Accessible, Able to Answer Phone Calls from Law Enforcement Officers at All Times During Scheduled Shifts and Prepared to Handle Tasks Assigned Throughout the Entire Work Shift. Partial Shift Absences Will Not Be Allowed. Telework Must Be Completed from A Location Within the State of California, and Employees May Be Required to Report On-Site to Address Business Needs.
- Most of The Shift Time Scheduled Is Stand-By Time and Not Work Time, Where the Epo Referee Is Free to Engage in Other Activities as Long as The Epo Referee Is Available Telephonically and Via Email to Perform the Duties Assigned when Contact Is Made.
- Compensation Will Be Based on Working the Entire 24-Hour Shift.
- When Time Off Necessitating a Schedule Change Is Desired, the Epo Referee Will Be Responsible to Obtain Coverage from Another Epo Referee to Work the Shift(s) Desired in Addition to His/her Own Scheduled Shifts. when Substitutions Are Made, the Epo Referee Originally Assigned Must Notify the Office of General Counsel of The Substitution.

- Must Be an Active/current Member in Good Standing with The State Bar of California and Have Ten (10) Years of Legal Experience in The Practice of Law.
- Possession of A Juris Doctor Degree from An Accredited Law School.
- May Not Engage in The Active Practice of Law During the Duration of The Employment Appointment as An Epo Referee.
Additional Requirements:
- Must Complete Assignment-Specific Training as Directed by The Superior Court.
- Must Be Able to Objectively Review Evidence and Correctly Determine the Information Necessary from The Facts Provided by The Applicable Law Enforcement Officials to Issue the Appropriate Orders Described in The Duties of This Position.
- Must Be Able to Occasionally Work Additional Work Shifts to Provide Coverage in The Absence of Another Epo Referee.
- Must Be Able to Receive and Respond to Cellular Telephone Calls and Use a Computer, Where Necessary, for The Entire Work Shift as Assigned. Adequate Reception and Connectivity Must Be Available for The Use of These Electronic Devices.
- Must Have Internet Access with Antivirus Software as Well as Provide Own Internet Service and Computer Equipment. Note: The Court Will Not Provide Equipment and Will Not Cover the Expense for Phone or Internet Service, or The Maintenance of Personal Equipment.
