The CARE Healing Center, formerly the Rape Crisis Intervention Service of Carroll County, has been providing compassionate, confidential support to survivors of sexual violence since 1978. As a growing nonprofit dedicated to healing, advocacy, and prevention, CARE is expanding its impact through the development of a new Legal Services Program to better meet the complex needs of survivors. This position will play a key role in building and implementing these services for our community.Please note: This is a grant-funded position and continued employment is contingent upon ongoing grant funding.
Job Overview:
The Legal Director will be responsible for developing and establishing a new Legal Services Program at the CARE Healing Center. This position will oversee all aspects of program administration, including supervision, grant compliance, and program expansion and implementation. The Legal Director will also assist with community education initiatives and agency projects. In addition to program development, the Legal Director will provide direct legal representation to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking in civil legal matters, including but not limited to initiating lawsuits, drafting legal documents and memoranda, and advising clients on their legal rights.
Responsibilities:
- Responsible for the overall development and operation of the CARE Legal Services Program.
- Provide direct legal representation to CARE clients.
- Evaluate the needs of the program and make appropriate changes and/or additions to the program.
- Write and implement agency policy and procedure for the Legal Services Program adhering to all ethical and legal standards.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records on each program staff member.
- Supervise all staff members of the program. Meet regularly both individually and collectively to discuss cases, procedures, and problems.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records on all clients in the program.
- Write, implement, and report on grants for legal services and the agency as a whole.
- Maintain and report accurate and up-to-date statistics for the program, including but not limited to drafting reports and maintaining data collection software.
- Maintain liaisons with community courts and criminal justice agencies.
- Develop and maintain a program for recruiting, training, and supervising students to work as legal interns.
- Develop and maintain innovative methods of providing information and support to domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking clients who are going through the civil and criminal justice system.
- Other duties as assigned by management.
Qualifications:
- Juris Doctorate from an ABA-accredited law school.
- Membership in good standing with the Maryland Bar.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in family law or cases involving domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking or stalking.
- Supervisory experience preferred.
- Commitment to advocacy and legal services for survivors.
