About the Position:
A Government Entity is accepting applications for the position of Deputy County Counsel I/II/III/IV. The County Counsel's office serves as the general counsel for the County of San Luis Obispo and rely on the office for a full range of legal services.

The current vacancy is for a Juvenile Dependency Attorney to primarily represent the Department of Social Services in dependency cases. Position may require additional advisory duties for the Department of Social Services or other county departments as needed. Preference will be given to applicants with knowledge or demonstrated interest in juvenile dependency law, privacy and confidentiality laws, social service laws and regulation and general government law. Persons with prior juvenile dependency experiences as parents and minors counsel as well as agency counsel welcome to apply.

This recruitment may be used to fill future permanent, substitute, limited term, and temporary positions, both full-time and part-time throughout the County.

The ideal candidate:
The ideal candidate will possess:
  • Proven ability to represent the Department of Social Services in Juvenile dependency cases from case filing to final resolution of the case
  • Substantive knowledge of juvenile law, the applicable privacy and confidentiality laws
  • Ability to work positively with the department, opposing counsel and the court.
  • Have exceptional legal research and writing skills
  • Be a reliable and strategic legal advisor
  • Be able to simultaneously prioritize and manage multiple projects under tight deadlines
  • Must be a member in good standing with the California Bar

Minimum Qualifications:
Specialized experience requirements dependent upon the needs of the Office of the County Counsel will be set forth specifically at the time of recruitment. Active membership in the California State Bar; AND:
Deputy County Counsel I: No experience required.

Deputy County Counsel II: Either A: One year of experience as an attorney in the practice of law for a public agency or two years in the practice of general civil law; OR B: One year of experience performing duties equivalent to the class of Deputy County Counsel I with A Government Entity or another County Counsel's office.

Deputy County Counsel III: Either A: Two years of experience as an attorney in the practice of law for a public agency or three years in the practice of general civil law; OR B: One year of experience performing duties equivalent to the class of Deputy County Counsel II with A Government Entity or another County Counsel's office.

Deputy County Counsel IV: Either A: Three years of progressively responsible experience as an attorney in the practice of law for a public agency or four years in the practice of general civil law; OR B: One year of experience performing duties equivalent to the class of Deputy County Counsel III with A Government Entity or another County Counsel's office.

Licenses and Certificates:
Certain positions within this classification may require driving. When driving is an essential function of the position, a valid CALIFORNIA driver's license will be required at the time of appointment.
