Job Description:
The Gwinnett County Law Department provides legal services to Gwinnett County, including the Board of Commissioners, County Administrator, County departments and offices, and elected officials. The Law Department has an opening for a Deputy County Attorney. The Deputy County Attorney position provides general legal counsel representing the interests of the County, multiple departments and offices, elected officials, boards and authorities in accordance with state and federal laws and the rules of professional conduct. The Deputy County Attorney works closely with the County Attorney, supervises a team of senior assistant county attorneys within their assigned division, and handles complex legal matters.

Essential Duties:
  • Managing daily operations of assigned division, including supervising senior assistant county attorneys and monitoring and coordinating matters assigned to senior assistant county attorneys and retained outside counsel
  • Evaluating, reviewing, and managing complex legal matters as assigned
  • Providing legal advice to represented clients, department directors, elected officials, and boards and authorities as assigned
  • Attending meetings, researching and assessing legal issues and internal policies and procedures, and providing legal opinions
  • Advising clients on and implementing legal solutions
  • Reviewing, drafting, and interpreting laws, ordinances, regulations, policies, and resolutions and providing advice, information, and training regarding new and amended laws and regulations as needed
  • Reviewing, negotiating and drafting contracts and agreements to ensure compliance with internal policies and procedures, as well as local, state, and federal laws and to protect the County's interest; and providing legal advice regarding contract terms and enforcement thereof
  • Representing assigned clients in litigation, in both State and Federal courts at the trial and appellate levels, to include: condemnations, tax appeals, nuisance abatement actions, zoning disputes, and personal injury suits
  • Maintaining a comprehensive, current knowledge and awareness of applicable laws, regulations, case law, policies, and procedures; maintaining awareness of new procedures, trends, and advances in the profession
  • Participating in training and continuing education activities; attending and conducting meetings, workshops, and seminars as appropriate
  • Grade
  • This posting is for one Deputy County Attorney position with a pay grade of 307. Salary will be commensurate with years of relevant experience.

Effective 4/11/2023, this position is eligible for the Employee Referral Program.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Juris Doctorate
  • Ten years of experience as an attorney, including two years of supervisory experience
  • Member in good standing with the Georgia Bar and admitted to practice in the Superior Courts of Georgia

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in local government or related public setting
  • Experience in one or more of the following practice areas or related areas: real estate, zoning and land use, economic development, contracts, finance or technology
  • Oral and written communication skills
  • Admitted to practice in the Court of Appeals for the State of Georgia, the Georgia Supreme Court, and the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia
