The Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) is the largest Fire Department in the United States and universally is recognized as the world's busiest and most highly skilled emergency response agency. The Department's main goal is to provide fire protection, emergency medical care, and other critical public safety services to residents and visitors in the five boroughs. The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) seeks a full-time Deputy Code Development Counsel in the Bureau of Legal Affairs. Reporting directly to the Fire Code Counsel, the successful candidate will: assist in developing, drafting, advocating for enactment of, implementing and interpreting the New York City Fire Code, Fire Department rules and other public safety legislation and rules; interact regularly with City agency executives and staff, both within and outside the Fire Department, including Mayors Office and City Council representatives, as well as representatives from real estate, professional, community and other organizations.

Minimum Qualifications:
Admission to the New York State Bar; and four years of recent full-time responsible, relevant, satisfactory legal experience subsequent to admission to any bar, eighteen months of which must have been in the supervision of other attorneys, in an administrative, managerial or executive capacity, or performing highly complex and significant legal work.

Incumbents must remain Members of the New York State Bar in good standing for the duration of this employment.

Preferred Skills:
Excellent writing skills, with demonstrated ability in drafting complex legal documents. 2. Experience in drafting laws, rules or regulations, especially those relating to safety codes or standards. 3. Familiarity with fire and building codes, or other regulatory laws, rules or regulations or industry standards. 4. Excellent professional judgment and problem-solving skills. 5. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
