The Office of the New York State Attorney General (OAG) is seeking an experienced and dedicated attorney to serve as the Deputy Bureau Chief (DBC) of the Law Enforcement Misconduct Investigative Office (https://ag.ny.gov/bureau/LEMIO) (LEMIO) in New York City. The DBC position provides a unique and exciting opportunity to join a first-of-its-kind statewide oversight body charged with identifying and addressing law enforcement misconduct, protecting civil rights and civil liberties, and improving law enforcement practices. The DBC reports to and works collaboratively with the LEMIO Bureau Chief to manage the bureau's legal practice and day-to-day operations.

Established by Executive Law 75, LEMIO investigates allegations of misconduct, including patterns or practices of wrongful conduct and systemic deficiencies, reviews policies and procedures of covered agencies, and makes recommendations for reform and/or remedial measures, including disciplinary action. LEMIO also may pursue civil litigation to address persistent misconduct, with the goal of achieving structural reforms to prevent civil rights violations.

The DBC is a critical part of LEMIO's leadership team. The DBC works with the Bureau Chief to develop the bureau's enforcement and policy strategies and supervise more than twenty attorneys and supporting staff who are located in New York City, Albany and Buffalo. The DBC will also work with the Bureau Chief and other LEMIO personnel to build relationships with covered agencies, community stakeholders, and experts.

Qualifications:

Candidates should have at least nine (9) years of complex civil litigation or criminal law experience, preferably including matters relating to civil rights or law enforcement misconduct.
Prior experience managing/supervising teams of attorneys and supporting staff is preferred.
Effective interpersonal communication, conflict resolution, problem solving, and teamwork skills.
Excellent analytic, research, writing, editing, and oral advocacy skills.
Candidates must demonstrate strategic vision, strong organizational and interpersonal communication skills, and the ability to lead and support colleagues.
Candidates should be familiar with state and federal law governing law enforcement conduct.
Candidates must be comfortable working in a fast-paced, dynamic office.
Experience and interest in community outreach and developing relationships that support the bureau's work.
A demonstrated commitment to public service.

Applicants must reside in (or intend to soon become a resident of) New York state and be admitted to practice law in New York state. In addition, the Public Officers Law requires that OAG attorneys be citizens of the United States. A two (2) year commitment upon being hired is a condition of employment.

The salary for this position is $198,028 plus $4,150 in location pay.
