Duties: The Community Affairs, State and Elections (CASE) section represents and counsels the Department of State, the Department of Community Affairs, and the Civil Service Commission, among several other state agencies. With this broad portfolio, the Section engages deeply with dynamic issues such as elections administration and federal-facing elections litigation, housing and land use law and policy, local government services and finance, and civil service regulations and agency decisions. Counseling and litigation are both important parts of CASE's work. CASE attorneys litigate in both state and federal court and in the New Jersey Office of Administrative Law, often handling matters from the pre-trial stage through appeals. The Section Chief manages the Section in collaboration with Division of Law leadership. Management involves assigning matters and supervising Assistant Section Chiefs and deputies in both their counseling and litigation activities; conducting evaluations and case file reviews; and performing other duties as required. The Section Chief also has tremendous opportunity to work directly with client agencies and department leadership on strategic counseling and litigation issues; and performs other duties as required.
Requirements Education: Graduation from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctor. Admission to practice as an Attorney-at-Law in the State of New Jersey is required.
Experience: Five (5) years of experience as a practicing attorney, two (2) years of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity.
License: Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
