Criminal Assistant State's Attorney – Job Summary

The McHenry County State's Attorney's Office in Woodstock, Illinois, is seeking an Assistant State's Attorney for its Criminal Division. This attorney will perform responsible functions in the area of criminal litigation, including, but not limited to:
  • Performing research and writing
  • Preparing for trial by notifying and interviewing victims and witnesses
  • Preparing written motions, briefs, orders, and other legal documents
  • Negotiating and entering plea agreements by reviewing charges, police reports, and criminal records
  • Preparing orders of supervision, conditional discharge, or probation
  • Conducting adversarial hearings, bench trials, and/or jury trials
  • Prosecuting criminal cases
  • Interacting with staff, county officials, law enforcement officers, victims and the general public in person or by telephone in order to respond to inquiries, receive complaints, and resolve problems
  • Performing other related duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications Required:
Experience: 3-5 years of criminal prosecution experience

Education: Juris Doctor

License and Certifications:
Valid Driver's License

Knowledge And Skills Required:
Knowledge of:
  • Illinois Criminal Code and Criminal Procedure
  • Trial advocacy
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Skilled in:
  • Communicating effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Arguing persuasively before a judge and/or jury
  • Assimilating facts and drawing sound conclusions
  • Using tact, discretion, initiative and independent judgment within established guidelines
  • Organizing work, setting priorities, meeting critical deadlines and following up assignments with minimum direction
  • Preparing well-reasoned and well-researched motions and briefs
  • Accurately proofreading copy with accompanying knowledge of grammar, punctuation and spelling
  • Performing data entry using word processing, spreadsheet or database commands and formats material as required
