Overview:
The Counsel I, Litigatoin will be responsible for managing disputes, advising business stakeholders, and representing the Company in litigation and administrative proceedings. This role operates both independently and under supervision, partnering closely with internal teams and outside counsel to drive effective, efficient legal strategies aligned with business objectives.

The position handles a diverse portfolio including Proposition 65 matters, commercial disputes, employment claims, product liability, consumer and labeling issues, intellectual property, real estate litigation, wage claims, and third-party subpoenas.

The position reports into the Store Support Office located in Phoenix, AZ. Hybrid schedule in office Tuesday-Thursday.

Overview of Responsibilities

Litigation Management:
  • Lead fact investigations, discovery processes, and document management (including subpoenas and production).
  • Analyze claims and develop litigation and early resolution strategies.
  • Draft and review pleadings, motions, briefs, and legal correspondence.
  • Appear as counsel in administrative proceedings (e.g., wage claim hearings).

Business Advisory & Risk Management:
  • Advise internal stakeholders and leadership on legal risk, claim exposure, and dispute avoidance strategies.
  • Support business decision-making with clear, actionable legal guidance.
  • Partner cross-functionally to proactively mitigate risk.

Case & Outside Counsel Oversight:
  • Manage outside counsel, including strategy alignment, performance, and cost control.
  • Oversee defense tenders and indemnification claims with third parties.
  • Prepare witnesses for depositions, hearings, and interviews.

Operational Excellence:
  • Monitor and report on litigation trends and risk insights.
  • Manage litigation holds and records retention processes.
  • Track and manage legal spend, identifying cost efficiencies and trends.

Collaboration & Engagement:
  • Partner with internal legal teams on broader dispute resolution and risk initiatives.
  • Build strong relationships across the business and with external stakeholders.
  • Contribute to team initiatives and special projects.

Qualifications:
  • JD from an ABA-accredited law school; active bar membership required.
  • Minimum 2+ years of civil litigation experience (law firm or in-house).
  • Experience with California-specific litigation (e.g., PAGA, Prop 65) preferred.
