Job Description:The University is seeking one or more Health Care Attorneys to join the Health Care Practice Group of its Office of General Counsel. The Health Care Attorneys will provide essential support to MU Health Care, MU School of Medicine, and other clinical operations and health schools within the University. These positions will provide legal guidance on routine, moderately complex, and complex matters, aiming to ensure compliance with legal standards and policies. The attorneys will collaborate within the health care legal team to enhance processes. They will work with university academic and business leaders to analyze problems, assess risks, and inform decisions that impact policies, procedures, and practices.
The University is seeking candidates with the following experience and expertise:
Transactional and corporate emphasis: Experience in health care transactions, contracting (managed care, professional and facility service, supply chain, and health IT), and corporate matters is preferred.
Health care regulatory and operational emphasis: Experience in health care regulatory compliance and operational matters is preferred.

This posting is a tiered posting with Counsel II and Senior Counsel positions. The University may fill multiple positions. Key Responsibilities:
- Provide legal advice and counsel to the University's healthcare operations and schools on routine, moderately complex, and complex legal matters.
- Analyze problems, assess needs, and exercise judgment in adapting broad guidelines to achieve desired results.
- Make recommendations affecting policies, procedures, and practices, referring exceptions to senior attorneys when necessary.
- Coordinate with the contracting office and business leaders on transactional matters, including contract negotiation and drafting.
- Assess the application of university policy and legal authorities to varied client scenarios, involving other stakeholders and decision-makers within the university as needed.
- Evaluate legal, operational, and financial risks to determine when items should be elevated within the Office of General Counsel and/or to university academic and business leaders.
- Collaborate within the healthcare legal team to enhance processes and promote compliance with legal standards and policies.
- Conduct training sessions to equip University faculty and staff with the necessary legal knowledge and skills for their roles.
- Engage in routine contact with leaders in health schools and clinical health operations.
Candidates must have a Juris Doctor or LLB degree from an ABA accredited law school and be in good standing with all bars or bar associations and no prior disciplinary matters. Admission to Missouri Bar or eligibility for admission by reciprocity is necessary. At least two (2) years' experience is required with knowledge of federal, state and local laws preferred. Shift:
Monday - Friday, 8 am – 5 pm. Evening and weekend work may be required
Minimum Qualifications:
A Juris Doctor or LLB degree from an ABA accredited law school. License to practice law in Missouri or eligible for admission to the Missouri Bar.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in health law or related fields.
- Two or more years of experience in a law firm, corporate legal office, or governmental agency providing legal advice to clients and client representatives. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a team and independently.
- Familiarity with relevant health care laws, regulations, and industry standards, including privacy laws and laws applicable to health research.
- Prior experience with business transactions and contract negotiation, drafting, and review for health care entities and academic institutions.
- Prior experience with health care regulatory compliance and operations;
- Demonstrated ability to handle highly complex information with sensitivity and discretion.
- Membership in relevant professional organizations or associations related to health law.
- Proficiency in standard business and legal office application systems/software, along with comfort in utilizing business and legal applications.
Anticipated Hiring Range
Salary Range: Compensation starts at $135,000 per year, commensurate with experience and qualification
