Marathon Petroleum Corporation is seeking a Counsel to provide legal guidance on issues related to its back-end corporate functions across the enterprise. This role focuses on contract drafting and negotiation, issue identification, and day‑to‑day legal support for a wide variety of subject matters. This role is well‑suited for a developing in‑house attorney who is building depth across corporate legal matters while learning to manage risk within a large, regulated organization.
The role emphasizes delivering practical, business‑minded legal solutions and calls for a versatile attorney who is comfortable supporting a diverse collection of legal work. This position will report directly to the Assistant General Counsel & Chief Privacy Officer.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide Effective Legal Services. Generate strong legal analysis, work product, and advice. Provide legal advice and services that are relevant, practical, and meaningful to business units. Become an integral partner to the Company's business units, understanding business strategies and objectives.
- Legal Counseling and Training. Identify and implement proactive approaches to counseling business units on a variety of legal topics, including contract language interpretation, negotiation strategies, risk allocation, and statutory and regulatory obligations and compliance.
- Conducts legal research and issue counsel to clients.
- Identifies areas for preventive law training and effectively develops and delivers training programs.
- Effectively manages legal risk in area of subject matter coverage. Develops proposals and solutions for review.
- Communicates regularly with supervising attorney to ensure alignment, transparency, and a “no surprises” environment.
- Supports Law Organization initiatives, projects, and cross‑functional efforts as assigned.
- Ensures continuing legal education requirements are met timely, with a focus on advancing knowledge in areas of the law significant to the to the company.
- Performs other duties, as assigned.
Education and Experience:
- Juris Doctor degree from an accredited U.S. law school
- Active license to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction; ability to maintain licensure consistent with company requirements
- Approximately 2 years of relevant legal experience
- Prior in‑house experience or experience supporting corporate or administrative functions is preferred but not required
