The purpose of the Corporation Counsel is to serve as the Chief Legal Officer of Sauk County, pursuant to Wisconsin State Statute 59.42. Provides all legal advice and representation for Sauk County government and manages the operations of the Sauk County Corporation Counsel Office.

Position Summary:
  • Represent Sauk County in litigation, mediation, negotiation, and/or arbitration before State, Federal, and Tribal Courts, administrative tribunals, and others. Serve as the senior attorney for Sauk County government and all connected boards and commissions.
  • Direct and manage all legal activities such as advice, representation, and litigation.
  • Serve as chief procurement counsel by advising the County on requests for proposals, requests for bids, construction contracts, and architectural and engineering contracts.
  • Serve as reviser of the Sauk County Code or Ordinances, ensuring lawful codification of ordinances, interpretation, and legal sufficiency. Provide legal advice and counsel to the County Board, County committees and departments concerning a variety of legal issues.
  • Review all County contracts, drafts resolutions, memorandums or other legal documents.
  • Represent the County and State of Wisconsin in legal matters pertaining to the establishment of paternity of non-marital children and the establishment and collection of child support, medical support, or medical assistance.
  • Facilitate resolution of these issues without litigation or presents evidence in court.
  • Appear at divorce hearings or other court hearings, as needed.
  • Represent the County, plans for, conduct and directs proceedings in a variety of civil matters in representing the interest of the County in matters including mental commitments, protective placements, and guardianships.
  • Review legal evidence provided by law enforcement and medical personnel to determine whether sufficient evidence exists to commence court proceedings.
  • Draft pleadings and other court documents; prepare for trial by conferring with relevant parties; interviewing witnesses; negotiating possible resolutions.
  • Present evidence at trials, prepare court orders and oversee court actions until their conclusion.

Salary Information:
$132,080 to $140,129 Annual Salary Sauk County offers an exceptional, comprehensive benefits package including health and life insurance, eleven paid holidays, and a generous pension plan through the Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS). Job Details:
Required Working Hours
Standard working hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 am until 4:30 pm. Please note these hours are subject to change and additional hours may be needed or required. Compensation for additional hours beyond normal working hours are subject to applicable state and federal regulations.

Qualifications:
Required:
  • Juris Doctorate degree from an ABA accredited law school
  • Admission to the Wisconsin Bar, with current active bar membership
  • Five years government legal experience

License:
Valid Wisconsin State Motor Vehicle Operator's License

Preferred:
Three years of supervisory experience
