We are seeking a high caliber attorney to join our Legal Department, supporting legal and regulatory compliance for financial products and services. As Corporate Counsel at A Payment Processing Services and Technology Company, you'll be part of a growing and diverse team of smart and energetic attorneys, paralegals, and support staff. You will collaborate with colleagues from all over the company, partnering in initiatives that influence all aspects of the business. As an integrated part of the team, you will be the primary subject matter expert able to help to move the business forward in areas including, but not limited to:
  • providing legal and regulatory guidance through the life cycle of product development,
  • interpreting regulatory obligations consistent with A Payment Processing Services and Technology Company's risk tolerance, advising on regulations addressing financial services and payments, and
  • helping A Payment Processing Services and Technology Company's management team navigate its regulatory environment.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in financial services, interpretation and application of financial regulations, and exposure to banking regulators, preferably within the technology industry.

This is a hybrid position that requires you to come to the office approximately once per month for onsite meetings, events, and training. The remainder of the time you may work remotely from home. This position can be based to work out of the following locations: Allen, TX; Charlotte, NC; Lenexa, KS; and Springfield/Monett, MO. Travel up to 5% to other A Payment Processing Services and Technology Company offices for meetings/trainings or to professional conferences is required. Compensation for this position will depend on candidate experience and geographic location.

What you'll be responsible for:
  • Maintaining an up-to-date understanding of laws and regulations applicable to financial institutions and their technology environments.
  • Assessing risk to the business, and providing timely, business-focused, and actionable legal advice to business leaders.
  • Assisting in the review and assessment of new products, features, and services for compliance with laws, regulations, and industry best practices.
  • Communicating legal and regulatory concepts to product designers and engineers.
  • Drafting and advising on policies, processes, systems, and internal controls necessary to ensure compliance with regulatory and legal requirements.
  • Coordinating with data privacy counsel and product-supporting counsel on product compliance.
  • Providing guidance to corporate compliance team on regulatory issues and interactions.
  • Identifying and communicating key themes and updates from regulator interactions to appropriate internal parties.
  • Reviewing proposed regulations for possible commenting opportunities.
  • Being a reliable teammate willing to help others and adapt well when there is ambiguity.
  • May assist with verbal and written communications with regulators.
  • May perform other job duties as assigned.

What you'll need to have:
  • Juris Doctorate degree required and admitted to, and in good standing with, a state bar.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience of applicable legal practice, preferably in the financial services industry.
  • Knowledge of US banking laws and regulations.
  • Experience or familiarity in regulatory compliance, preferably in connection with financial services.
  • Sound judgment, interpersonal skills, ability to work independently and as part of a team, and excellent time management.
  • Must be able to travel up to 5% to other A Payment Processing Services and Technology Company office locations for meetings, training, or to attend a professional conference.
  • What would be nice for you to have:
  • Experience as in-house counsel for a publicly traded technology company.
  • Exposure to federal banking agencies.
  • Experience with corporate compliance program functions, including compliance processes and procedures, record-keeping, and enforcement.
  • Enjoy building client relationships and working closely with various teams, such as operations, engineering, finance, and sales, at all levels.
  • Self-starter who is curious and enjoys providing practical legal solutions in a fast-paced environment for a variety of matters.
  • Ability to see beyond the question asked to the larger issue and future implications.
