Position Information:
This is a contracted position.
The purpose of this classification is to provide research, legal counsel, and advice to assigned judges for their rulings in civil and criminal cases.

Distinguishing Characteristics
This classification is an entry level legal position in which the incumbent gains experience within the court system.

Essential Functions:
  • Prepares legal summaries of facts and arguments for cases to be brought before the court; and composes and prepares orders for judge's review and/or signature.
  • Conducts legal research; identifies and investigates the facts of legal matters; reviews legal opinions and various legal publications for research purposes; determines laws applicable to issues before court; drafts legal documents/memoranda on court cases, writs, and specific points of law; and briefs judge on issues in pending cases.
  • Reviews statistical data; evaluates and analyzes orders and motions, and monitors orders and motions for compliance with judicial rules, regulations and guidelines.
  • Evaluates and responds to requests for information and action submitted by the media, parties to cases, County personnel, and the general public.
  • Serves as a liaison to the general public; responds to and initiates telephone calls and emails; answers questions and provides information; and discusses content of communications with judge as needed.
  • Maintains a current, comprehensive knowledge and awareness of applicable laws, regulations, principles and practices relating to court operations; reads professional literature; maintains professional affiliations; and attends meetings, workshops, hearings, and training sessions as required
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
Juris Doctorate from an ABA accredited law school is required. This classification is considered to be an entry-level professional position, however previous work experience is preferred; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

Licenses and Certifications:
Must possess and maintain membership in the State Bar of Georgia.

Physical Abilities:
Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-10 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or work station.

Sensory Requirements
Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors:
Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as firearms, violence, or rude/irate customers.
