Overview:
The Contract Immigration Attorney will provide direct immigration legal services to low-income and underserved clients, support legal clinics, and collaborate with DOJ-accredited representatives and partner organizations. The attorney will handle a range of humanitarian and family-based immigration matters and help ensure compliance with EOIR Recognition & Accreditation program standards. This is an excellent opportunity for an attorney interested in flexible, community-based practice and building a growing legal services program in Houston serving African diaspora and broader immigrant communities.

Duties:
  • Provide legal consultations, screenings, and full-scope representation in immigration matters
  • Handle family-based petitions, adjustment of status, and naturalization applications
  • Support asylum, humanitarian relief, TPS, DACA, and related immigration filings
  • Provide removal defense services where contracted and qualified
  • Prepare and review applications, affidavits, and legal filings
  • Represent clients before USCIS and, where applicable, EOIR immigration courts
  • Conduct case strategy meetings and maintain accurate case files and documentation
  • Provide legal supervision or mentorship to DOJ-accredited representatives and legal staff
  • Support legal clinics, Know-Your-Rights workshops, and community outreach efforts
  • Ensure compliance with EOIR program requirements, state bar rules, and ethical standards

Qualifications:
  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school
  • Active bar membership in good standing
  • Minimum 2–5 years of immigration law experience
  • Demonstrated experience with USCIS filings and client representation
  • Experience working with nonprofit or low-income clients preferred
  • Strong cultural competency and commitment to immigrant communities
  • Ability to work independently in a contract role

Work Structure
  • Flexible contract arrangement (hourly, retainer, or per-case)
  • Hybrid: with periodic in-person clinics in Houston
  • Evening or weekend clinics may be required occasionally
