SWOG Cancer Research Network is one of five network groups that together comprise the National Cancer Institute's (NCI) National Clinical Trials Network (NCTN). SWOG designs and conducts multidisciplinary clinical trials to improve the practice of medicine in preventing, detecting, and treating cancer, and to enhance the quality of life for cancer survivors.

Provide contracting services for the provision of clinical trial support and resources within the SWOG Cancer Research Network environment. Develop contract language in keeping with both SWOG principles and NCI guidelines and standards. Negotiate language with pharmaceutical collaborators. Track trial development timelines and ensure that contracts are executed accordingly. Work collaboratively with SWOG investigators in institutions across the United States. Develop and execute Material Use and Data Use Agreements with various parties receiving SWOG specimens and data in accordance with SWOG and NCI policy and regulations. Develop exhibits as necessary to complete the contracting process.

Accountability:
The Contract Attorney reports to the SWOG Chief Medical Officer and Chief Administrative Officer

Responsibilities:
  • Always promote the mission of The Hope Foundation through our Professional Standards of Customer Service, Reliability, Productivity, Professionalism, Accuracy, Timeliness, and Problem-Solving.
  • Negotiate contract language with pharmaceutical and other external partners in keeping with SWOG and NCI policies and principles. Specifically, negotiate language for study agreements, material use agreements, data use agreements, confidential disclosure agreements, services agreements, licensing agreements, memorandum of understanding agreements, and other agreements that might arise.
  • Assist in tracking study development to ensure timely activation. Work closely with SWOG study teams, comprised of physician researchers, across the nation, and SWOG staff across core offices. Facilitate communications and act as a liaison between SWOG and outside participants, including pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies
  • Participate in regular operational calls that assess approved studies under development with the aim of evaluating legal and other requirements necessary to achieve success.
  • Advise SWOG Administrative Leadership on the status of contracts under development and any problems requiring escalation.
  • Coordinate legal review of contract language as necessary with the NCI.
  • Facilitate the periodic review of contracts as necessary and take leadership in the completion of contract amendments that become necessary.
  • Identify and report on barriers and issues related to contract development and pursue resolution.
  • Work with paralegal staff to manage the circulation of all contracts for review and execution.
  • Serve as a SWOG and NCTN ambassador to potential pharmaceutical collaborators explaining and educating them regarding the SWOG Cancer Research Network, NCI, and NCTN.
  • Evaluate translational medicine study plans and determine requirements for contracting. Communicate with SWOG's national human tissue bank as needed to assist with release of specimens from the bank when all requirements have been met on executed use agreements.
  • Assist with the development of standards, playbooks, contract templates and other materials helpful to this work.

Qualifications:
Education: Legal degree/JD

  • Some knowledge of the basics of clinical trial budget development and the crafting of statements of work and appendices is desired.
  • Some knowledge and understanding of the work of clinical trials is desired.
  • Some knowledge of clinical billing is desired.
