Shumaker is seeking a talented and motivated Real Estate Associate with a minimum of four years of commercial real estate experience to join our growing Real Estate practice in our Charlotte, North Carolina, office. Portable business is not required; however, successful candidates should be interested in building a book of business with the firm's support and resources.

This is an excellent opportunity to work alongside a highly regarded team representing developers, investors, lenders, REITs, business owners, hospitality companies, and other sophisticated clients in a broad range of commercial real estate transactions throughout North Carolina, South Carolina and beyond. Our attorneys regularly advise clients on acquisitions, dispositions, leasing, development, financing, and complex real estate matters involving a variety of asset classes.

We are looking for candidates who take a proactive approach and ownership of their work. Candidates must have a strong commitment to client service and a desire to develop and grow their transactional skills by working alongside exceptional attorneys.

Where You'll Work
This position is located in the Charlotte, North Carolina, office.

What You'll Do:
  • Draft, review, and negotiate commercial leases, purchase and sale agreements, and other related deal documents, in line with client expectations and closing timelines.
  • Interface with deal counsel and clients to obtain required documentation.
  • Review and negotiate financing agreements with lenders.
  • Research legal matters as needed, including but not limited to corporate and real estate law.
  • Represent clients in commercial real estate acquisitions, dispositions, and development projects.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate purchase and sale agreements, leases, easements, loan documents, and other transaction-related agreements.
  • Conduct and manage due diligence, including title and survey review and resolution of real estate-related issues.
  • Assist lenders, borrowers, developers, investors, and business owners in sophisticated financing transactions.
  • Work directly with clients and opposing counsel to efficiently manage transactions from contract through closing.

What We're Looking For:
  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school and active membership in good standing with the North Carolina or South Carolina Bar.
  • 4+ years of commercial real estate experience gained at a law firm or in-house legal department.
  • Experience handling acquisitions, dispositions, leasing, financing, and development matters.
  • Strong drafting, negotiation, and analytical skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and client service skills.
  • Ability to independently manage matters while working effectively as part of a collaborative team.
  • Comfortable handling the lifecycle of commercial real estate transactions with a strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work with a variety of attorneys, paralegals, and staff, and maintain a high degree of confidentiality.

Physical Requirements:
  • Sitting frequently, approximately six out of eight hours per day. Sitting position static for up to one-half hour at a time.
  • Standing or walking frequently, up to six hours per day.
  • Lifting and carrying up to 20 pounds occasionally, up to one hour per day.
  • Bending and stooping occasionally, up to one-half hour per day.
