Job Description:
We are seeking a Commercial Casualty Claims Counsel for our New York City or Garden City, NY office.

This position will focus on the claims management of primary and excess General Liability files impacting Construction-related insureds, which include New York Labor Law claims, bodily injury, property damage and construction defect cases. The candidate must possess strong technical knowledge, legal insight, accuracy, responsiveness and display a high degree of customer service. We seek a claims professional with strong skill sets in communication, time management, problem solving, claim evaluation, and being a team player.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Direct handling and management of primary and excess General Liability claims for Construction-related insureds such as New York Labor Law, Construction Defect, Bodily Injury, and Property Damage
  • Provide coverage and analytical analysis of potential exposures
  • Communicate appropriate responses to management and underwriters on new losses
  • Manage counsel where assigned; develop and execute strategy to control expenses and resolve litigated claims
  • Establish appropriate reserves
  • Provide written assessments on loss trends and high exposure cases
  • Analyze loss and expense trends on a portfolio of claims and assist in the development and implementation of plans to improve results
  • Ensure that all claim information is reviewed and accurately and timely recorded
  • Proactively manage correspondence and claim files and maintain a current diary in compliance with company standards
  • Effectively represent the company's interests in meetings and negotiations
  • Support underwriters and actuaries during the renewal process
  • Consult on policy and endorsement drafting where necessary
  • Maintain a high level of claim and industry related expertise in order to assure technical competency and communicate to team members regarding significant issues and relevant changes

Required Skills & Qualifications:
  • BA/BS degree required
  • Juris Doctorate is preferred, but not required
  • Insurance related professional designations/education such as CPCU, IIA & SCLA a plus
  • 5-7 years in an insurance technical claims position or at a law firm with an emphasis on managing Construction-related files
  • Excellent writing, presentation and communication skills
  • Ability to assess coverage and tender opportunities; oversee and evaluate claim files for best outcomes; pursue and assess underlying policy limit/SIR's for reserving; audit underlying claim files; and resolve claims
  • Ability to establish close working relationship with the underwriting team through open communication and assist with aspects of marketing
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects to successful completion
  • Strong ability to prioritize and work independently; self- starter and a team player
  • Strong computer skills (MS Word, Excel, Outlook and various in-house claims systems –Guidewire, Genius, ImageRight is a plus)
