Responsibilities:
The Florida State University College of Law invites applications for the position of Clinical Professor and Co-Director of Externships, to begin as early as August 2026. The position is non-tenure track but is a specialized Teaching Faculty position eligible for long-term renewable contracts.

This position oversees externships at Judicial, Federal/State/Local Government, Public Interest, International, Corporate, and Law Firm placements. The faculty member will also teach one course for J.D. credit each year. Duties include coordinating externship supervision with approximately 100 different externship sites, reviewing student applications and placing them in externships, counseling students, and teaching weekly Perspectives classes for externship programs. The position is responsible for engaging in regular outreach to existing and potential externship sites, reviewing and responding to weekly journal submissions from students participating in externships, serving as the contact person for student concerns and inquiries regarding externship placements, and ensuring that all externships comply with ABA Standards for Legal Education as well as University regulations. In consultation with the Dean and the Faculty Curriculum Committee, the co-Directors will help shape the College of Law's rules and regulations applicable to externships.

Qualifications:
  • Candidates must have a J.D. degree from an accredited law school and at least 10 years of experience teaching and/or practicing law.
  • Candidates must possess excellent interpersonal relationship skills, organizational skills, as well as effective communication and problem-solving skills.
  • A commitment to academic excellence and the ability to work effectively with faculty and staff colleagues, students, and external constituencies such as site supervisors (judges, general counsel, partners, and senior attorneys), alumni, and other potential employers, is expected.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • State Bar license is strongly preferred.
  • Teaching experience in externships or another professional/skills capacity.
  • Broad law practice experience.

The anticipated starting salary for this position is commensurate with experience and education. Salaries are competitive with those for similar positions at other law schools.
