Position Overview:
Claim Counsel will provide legal counsel and strategic guidance regarding commercial property and casualty insurance claims. Reporting to VP of Claims & Claims Counsel, this position involves managing a portfolio of lawsuits against the company, offering legal opinions on insurance coverage and liability, collaborating with claim professionals, and engaging in litigation management. The successful candidate will serve as a key resource for claims professionals, underwriters, and company leadership, ensuring claims are investigated, evaluated, negotiated, and resolved in accordance with applicable policy provisions, statutes, and best practices.

Job Summary:
  • Analyze, interpret and provide legal counsel regarding commercial insurance policy language.
  • Interact and support all lines of business, addressing both first party and liability claims.
  • Working with outside local counsel, manage a pending of coverage, bad faith, and extra-contractual litigation against the Company, including:
    • Providing strategic input on litigation;
    • Reporting to and advising senior leadership on adverse exposures;
    • Drafting and reviewing pleadings, discovery documents and motions;
    • Attending mediations, depositions and trials, as needed; and
    • Review legal invoices to ensure responsible expense discipline.
  • Assist claim staff and leadership with policy limit / time limit demands on liability files.
  • Navigate coverage disputes between carriers, especially relating to risk transfer.
  • Assist with drafting and editing coverage positions letters.
  • Provide internal coverage opinions, as appropriate.
  • Deliver engaging training to Claim Division staff on best practices, good faith claims handling, and relevant developments in the law to promote effective and compliant claims handling.
  • Participate in the coverage assignment referral process to outside counsel, as needed.
  • Promote positive relationships with policyholders, agents, brokers and vendors to support excellent customer service and protect the company's interests.

Qualifications:
  • Must possess a Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Admission to the bar and license to practice law in at least one state.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in insurance coverage and litigation.
  • Strong analytical and communications skills, with the ability to convey complex legal concepts to others.
  • Proficiency in using Adobe Acrobat and Microsoft Office is essential.
  • Familiarity with LexisNexis for legal research.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment, managing multipe priorities effectively.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior experience as a civil litigator preferred.
  • Insurance designations, such as CPCU, AIC, preferred.
  • National Range: $105,000.00 - $135,000.00
  • Ultimate salary offered will be based on factors such as applicant experience and geographic location.
