Role Description:
The Claims Attorney is responsible for handling Declaratory Judgment (DJ) claims files for An Insurance Company, including coverage issues, litigation, and arbitration, for the Claims Division as well as coverage support for other divisions.

Responsibilities:
  • The Claims Attorney will be responsible for providing high level technical claims handling and support to claim associates and underwriters.
  • The Claims Attorney will analyze coverage under excess, surplus, specialty property and casualty insurance.
  • The Claims Attorney will review different lines of business including but not necessarily limited to property, auto liability, products liability, habitational, hired/non-owned, professional liability (medical/lawyers/real estate agents/title agents), public entity, schools, churches, universities, New York contractors, and/or restaurant delivery insurance.
  • The Claims Attorney prepares prompt, thorough and articulate reports for management and provides underwriters with valuable information and intelligence.
  • The Claims Attorney will be responsible for legal research, written coverage analysis and managing coverage disputes both prior to and after the initiation of coverage litigation by or against GenStar.
  • The Claims Attorney maintains a legal license, is current with all continuing education requirements, and attends industry-related educational programs.
  • The Claims Attorney adheres to the Company's technical and administrative standards/guidelines and remains current on industry standards/guidelines and legal decisions that impact claim handling and exposures.
  • The Claims Attorney attends settlement conferences and/or mediations, ADR (Alternative Dispute Resolutions), arbitrations and trials as warranted.
  • The Claims Attorney is expected to travel as necessary and as required by the Company.

Role Qualifications and Experience
  • JD from an accredited law school and must be licensed to practice law and in good standing in at least one US state.
  • Undergraduate college degree.
  • 5+ years of experience in an insurance/reinsurance company or as a member of a law firm dealing with all aspects in insurance/reinsurance law.
  • Experience in insurance coverage analysis in the school context would be very useful.
  • Prior experience in interpretation and analysis of insurance/reinsurance contracts.
  • Prior experience in negotiation including attendance as mediations.

  • Industry designations/course work is a plus.
  • Substantial insurance coverage litigation experience is a plus.
