About this Job:
The Department of Justice, Office of Attorney General Liz Murrill, is seeking applications for a Director/Assistant Attorney General in the Civil Division. Salary offered will be commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the candidate selected.

The Director is responsible for the overall leadership, management, and legal operations of the Civil Division. The Division provides legal representation, advice, and services to state officials, agencies, boards, commissions, and other governmental entities on a broad range of civil and governmental matters. The Director provides strategic and legal guidance to Division attorneys and supervisors and oversees matters involving governmental law, Attorney General opinions, public finance and contracts, environmental law, and state lands and natural resources.

This is a senior-level leadership position requiring extensive civil and governmental law experience, and demonstrated experience managing attorneys and complex legal matters.

Minimum Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school;
  • Current admission to the Louisiana State Bar and eligibility to practice law in Louisiana.

Preferred Qualifications:
Preference may be given to candidates with:
  • Significant experience in civil and governmental law;
  • Extensive knowledge of Louisiana statutory, administrative, and governmental law;
  • Experience advising state agencies, public officials, boards, commissions, or other governmental entities;
  • Experience supervising attorneys and managing complex legal matters;
  • Experience in public finance and contracts, environmental law, state lands and natural resources, or other areas handled by the Civil Division;
  • Strong leadership, legal judgment, analytical, and decision-making skills.;
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

Job Duties and Other Information

The duties and requirements of a Director/Assistant Attorney General in the Civil Division shall include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Directs the operations, personnel, workload, and legal work of the Civil Division;
  • Supervises attorneys, section chiefs, paralegals, and support staff and establishes Division priorities and assignments;
  • Oversees legal representation and advice provided to state officials, agencies, boards, commissions, and other governmental entities;
  • Provides strategic direction on significant, complex, and sensitive civil matters;
  • Oversees matters involving governmental law, Attorney General opinions, public finance and contracts, environmental law, and state lands and natural resources;
  • Advises the Attorney General and executive leadership on significant civil matters and emerging legal issues;
  • Coordinates with state agencies and other governmental entities on matters handled by the Division;
  • Ensures compliance with applicable laws, court rules, ethical obligations, Department policies, and professional standards;
  • Participates in hiring, performance management, personnel assignments, and other staffing and operational decisions;
  • Represents the Department at meetings, conferences, legislative proceedings, and other official functions;
  • Performs other duties and special assignments as directed.
