Opportunity to practice Law in beautiful Dillon Montana

The City of Dillon is looking for an experienced attorney to handle civil matters and misdemeanor criminal matters. As the Dillon City Attorney, you will work closely with the Mayor, Director of Operations, and Dillon City Police Department. You will be a voting member on the DUI Task Force Board and play a key role at zoning commission meetings, planning board meetings and other city council meetings. The City Attorney's Office is situated in a generous space on the second floor of City Hall and is staffed with a full-time paralegal. The position exposes an attorney to the many aspects of city government, as well as the prosecution of misdemeanor crimes within the city limits. A minimum of three (3) years experience is required. Negotiable salary dependant on experience, plus a competitive benefit package, including PERS retirement. Resume and three (3) references required.

Requirements:
General Purpose:
Performs a variety of complex, high level administrative, technical and professional work in prosecuting crimes, conducting civil lawsuits, drawing up and analyzing legal documents, advising City Officials as to legal rights, obligations, practices, and other phases of applicable local, state and Federal law.

Required Education and/or Experience
  • Graduation from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctor degree in law; and at least three (3) years of experience as a practicing attorney.
  • Considerable knowledge of municipal court, state statutes, regulations and ordinances relating to municipal affairs; considerable knowledge of laws relating to the purchase of goods and services, contracting, labor, employment, land use, environment and traffic; working knowledge of modern policies and practices of municipal law and public administration.
  • Skill in court appearances and in preparing briefs and other legal documents; skill in operating a personal computer, including word processing and spreadsheet programs; calculator, telephone, copy machine and fax machine.
  • Ability to prepare and analyze comprehensive legal documents; ability to carry out assigned projects to their completion; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, city officials, the court system, and the general public; ability to efficiently and effectively administer a municipal legal department.
  • A license to practice law in the State of Montana; member in good standing of the State Bar of Montana; valid driver's license, or evidence of equivalent mobility.
  • Preference will be given to applicants that have been honorably discharged from a military branch of the United States Government. A DD214 could be required for the preference.
