Job Summary:
The City Attorney is the chief legal advisor to the City Council, City Administrator and City department heads. The City Attorney, directly or through subordinates, provides legal advice and support services in a variety of areas including contracts, civil service and employment matters, real estate, economic development and the regulation of land uses and other activities. Oversees and coordinates the activities of the outside counsel when employed for litigation or specialized legal services for the City. The City Attorney is also responsible for the prosecution of misdemeanor offences in the City's Municipal Court.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
Doctorate of Jurisprudence. Seven (7) years of experience in the practice of municipal or other governmental law.

Special Requirements:
Possession of a license to practice law in the State of Texas.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of recent developments in municipal and criminal law as they relate to the duties of the position.
  • Ability to conduct prosecutions effectively and in conformity with applicable law and prosecutorial ethics.
  • Knowledge of recent developments in municipal and criminal law as they relate to the duties of the position.
  • Ability to carefully research all legal issues as necessary.
  • Ability to gather facts and consult with others as necessary to resolve legal issues. Prepares documents in an organized concise manner.
  • Ability to advocate positions in a responsible and effective manner.
  • Ability to carefully reviews all documents and pleadings for accuracy and legality.

Physical Demands:
The work is sedentary and requires exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: fingering, hearing, mental acuity, speaking, visual acuity, and walking.
