The Chief Privacy Counsel & Data Protection Officer (DPO) will lead the development and execution of the organization's global data privacy strategy, ensuring compliance while enabling innovation and business growth. This role requires a strategic legal mindset to balance regulatory risk with commercial opportunity, serving as a trusted advisor across the enterprise.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Chief Privacy Counsel Responsibilities (Legal Strategy)
- Provision of practical, timely, strategic, and high-quality legal advice and counsel on global privacy and data security-related matters across the organization, with a primary focus on approved markets;
- Collaborating and coordinating with key stakeholders to advise on applicable privacy and data protection laws, regulations, and guidelines affecting the business;
- Advising on potential liability and other legal aspects related to data privacy and data security incidents and supporting Accertify's privacy and cybersecurity incident response programs;
- Provision of robust legal support for the strategic reviewing, drafting, and negotiating of privacy and data security terms in contracts with business partners and vendors, including data processing agreements and data transfer agreements;
- Demonstrating strategic thinking about process improvement, efficiency, and skills development for the deal team and the GCO at large;
- Manage relevant outside counsel within budgetary guidelines to obtain desired results.
- Provide privacy advice in relation to AI governance, model use, and ethical AI frameworks
Data Protection Officer Responsibilities (Compliance Monitoring)
- Supporting the development and delivery of privacy training materials and other communications to increase employee understanding of Company privacy policies, data handling practices and procedures, and legal obligations;
- Serve as the primary point of contact for supervisory authorities and data subjects.;
- Oversee and advise on Data Protection Impact Assessments, Legitimate Interest Assessments, and Transfer Impact Assessments;
- Facilitate Record of Processing Activities (RoPA) completion by assisting teams with documentation requirements and providing guidance on completion;
- Assist in timely reporting of personal data breaches to regulators and affected individuals.
Skills & Qualifications:
- JD from an accredited law school
- CIPP/E, CIPP/US, or similar privacy certification
- Licensed to practice in Illinois, U.S., or qualified to become licensed in Illinois
- 6+ years of relevant legal experience
- In-depth knowledge of international, federal, state, and regional laws and regulations around privacy and data security, including GDPR and CPRA
- Strong negotiation and communication skills (both oral and written)
- Ability to communicate legal issues in a clear and understandable manner
- Inspires trust and confidence through effective communication and interpersonal skills
- Comfortable working in a small collegial team of seasoned attorneys and legal managers
- Strong credibility, judgment, and integrity
- Able to own work streams from inception through resolution.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and work effectively under time constraints
- Experience managing legal professionals in a business environment (preferred)
- Spanish or French language fluency (preferred).

- Visa Sponsorship: Employment eligibility to work for Accertify in the U.S. is required, as Accertify will not pursue Visa sponsorship for this position.
- The base salary range for this position is $200,000 – $210,000 USD, depending on experience, skills, and qualifications.
