The Berkshire District Attorney's Office is seeking to hire a Chief of District Court. This senior position reports directly to the Second Assistant who assumes responsibility for oversight of all Assistant District Attorneys serving in all district courts (including the jury of 6 and juvenile courts). The district courts are comprised of Northern Berkshire District Court, Southern Berkshire District Court, and Central Berkshire District Court. There are two juvenile courts, one in North Berkshires and one in Central Berkshires. There are jury sessions in Northern Berkshire District Court and Central Berkshire District Court.

Responsibilities:
  • Training, supervision, and scheduling of all Assistant District Attorneys working in district court
  • Participate in hiring Assistant District Attorneys for district court (including jury session and juvenile)
  • Oversee all criminal cases pending in the district courts of Berkshire County
  • Provide direct guidance and mentorship to Assistant District Attorneys on cases and general questions
  • Execute training for and provide direct mentorship to recently graduated assistant district attorneys
  • Review and approve adult diversions with particular emphasis on justice-involved individuals suffering with substance use disorders and mental health diagnoses
  • Attend weekly jury session team meetings and juvenile court team meetings
  • Host regular district court team meetings
  • Maintain a small caseload specific to area of expertise (this could include a small Superior Court case load- candidate dependent)

Qualifications:
Requirements:
  • Juris Doctorate Degree from an accredited law school
  • Bar Membership in Massachusetts
  • Minimum 10 years of experience as a prosecutor or criminal trial attorney
  • Experience in a supervisory or managerial position

Preferred:
  • Experience in developing and instituting adult diversion programs
  • Experience in hosting training for attorneys

Salary
 Range: $110,000 to $120,000 (commensurate with experience)

Full-time positions offer a State benefit package that includes medical/dental/vision insurance, life and disability insurance, retirement plans, and paid vacation, personal and sick leave and paid parental leave. ADA positions may qualify for public service loan forgiveness. Payroll is bi-weekly and based on a 37.5-hour work week.
